alternator upgrade

Good morning members I have a wiring problem which I hope you can help me with.Iam in the process
of up grading my alternator on my 1972 MK1 stag,I have a new alternator and lead but on removing my alternator
I find the connection are different to the ones on the new alternator,JP as told me that my exsting wiring needs to
be modified to MK2 spec; which means removing the black box on the o/s wing and wiring in the new lead.
As any member carried out this modification.and if so how did they go about it.Any comments are information
would be appreciated.

Jim, on your new alternator, which is presumably an 18ACR or similar, there are 3 connections: 2 big spade connectors and one small spade (6.3mm). The wiring from alternator to the car should be connected via a standard alternator 3 way block that houses the 3 connections (although they can be individual ones).

The two large spades must be connected to heavy duty wires (at least 25A rating each) that link to the battery + POS circuit, and this can be picked up at a stud through the bulkhead near the steering column. The small wire is the brown/purple that you will find was connected to your old alternator and will now connect to the new one.

Disconnect the battery, then disconnect all the old wiring from the two boxes to the existing harness. Insulate and seal off all the ends as a precaution. For original looks I kept the boxes and wiring in their original place.

Then connect up your new alternator wires as described. You should test the ignition light circuit by shorting the brown/purple wire to chassis before fitting it; the light should come on (wih ignition on).
