    Very occasional smokiness

In 18 months and about 4000 miles of ownership my car has had perhaps 4 o 5 occasions when it smokes really obviously at idle. It is really obvious in traffic but it seems the next time it is started it is perfectly fine again.

Overall oil consumption is pretty modest over the miles (maybe a litres last year), it runs beautifully and I cannot tell any difference in how it runs when affected; just a fair cloud of (presumably) oil smoke in the mirror.

The plugs all looked lovely when I changed them this year. The engine is standard except electronic ignition. Uses Valvoline VR 1 by the way.

    any ideas?

Do I need to worry, or investigate further?

Is this Steam or real Smoke? First few miles on a coldish day then all Stags (and other similar vintage classics) afaik look steamy.

If it was Oil it would have a blueish colour, have you had to top up the brake fluid

It is oil smoke, not steam. As I said it is very occasional. I am used to the steam on a nice cold day. This smoking can be fom cold or hot, and it is bluish.

The brake fluid has never budged either

Then it's engine oil, but from what you say then it's not too bad and something you can just live with. Unless you want to start looking at things like worn valve guides, piston rings etc.

            Could it be dashpot oil?

Or the crankcase breather system playing up?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

what would happen if lighter oil was used in the dash-pots? I used some shredder oil I had lying around but I've had to top up already with hardly any use! I had a random bit of blue smoke too..

The dashpot oil level never varies so I suspect not that.
Crankcase breather-possible. Not sure how I could check that?
If a valve guide was worn how might that be checked-and could it be so variable?

Had a lovely long (and totally smoke free run) with the roof off yesterday.

I didn't mention the crankcase breather as normally if it were blocked you would be posting about the amount of oil you had coming out of the engine gaskets and seals. A good rule of thumb to check it is remove the oil filler cap with the engine running at idle, you should notice a slight change in engine speed. The other way is blow back down the breather connection on the R/H cam cover.

To get an idea of worn valve guides you need to remove the cam shafts and then check the amount of sideways movement the valve stems have. As to being variable, it's possible given how the car may be parked and where the oil settles etc.

The only way it could burn the dash pot oil is if the needle O rings fail, but you say it's OK.

Few things for me to check or think about-thanks all

No desire to strip too much down as it runs so sweetly all the time and smoke-free 98% of the time

Sounds almost certainly getting occasional sips of fluid from the mastercylinder / servo.

I did allude to that but in my past experience. brake fluid does tend to burn and emit a whitish smoke. As does ATF when you have a car with a vacuum operated kickdown and the diaphragm fails. i.e. Rover SD1
