    Wiper motor advice

I've just managed to completely dismantle my wiper motor and, fingers crossed, got it going in advance of my MOT shortly.

However, the brushes are pretty well worn whilst the wires connecting it to the plug block and limit switch feel very brittle. Couple this with my ineptitude at soldering and I'm faced with a bit of a dilemna.

So, suggestions anyone ? - ideally I'd like to buy a good quality combined brush set and limit switch (they do come out of the motor coupled together after all) but I've not seen that offered anywhere.

Are the brush sets, that some of the suppliers offer, any good - has anybody any experience of fitting them ? Any tips on how to solder them ?

All advice or suggestions gratefully received

    Cheers

I have been keeping my eye out for ages for a brush card, the only one I have seen was in the USA for silly money. I did manage to but a parking switch off Ebay for £15 a while back though.

The brush card that Paddocks sell is for a 14W not a 16W This a picture of my motor which is a 16W so you can compare. Graham

          Hi Julian,
I ended up going down this path...tried the soldering with the USA items, even bought separate brushes when a few broke. The Paddocks one also has to be fettled with, it doesn't sit quite right, otherwise the brushes don't line up properly. Nevertheless, the wipers worked for a bit, then they would short out as the brushes moved and blow the fuse. Aligning the motor without breaking the brushes is also a pain - hence me buying more seperate brushes (got them a bit too tight and had to file them down a bit).
I gave up in the end, bought yet another USA set and gave the whole wiper motor (cleaned according to Dasadrew's instructions) to a local autoelectrician. Cost about $160 for his time. He said he had a difficult job with the set-up too. But the wipers work well now....

But you are a better man than me....

            Hi Graham, Andrew and Tanya,

Many thanks for all your comments and advice.

Hmmm - it doesn't seem that it's going to be as easy as I'd hoped (silly me ) Ah well.......

            Cheers

This sounds very complicated, so has anyone fitted a more modern unit instead? I haven't looked into this alternative myself yet, but if there is something out there that would fit without too many modifications I'd be interested to learn about it...

              Cheers,
              Joakim

I was wondering if you could fit a 14W there s plenty of parts around for them.

                  Julian,

I have a number of (old) spare big saloon type motors. You should be able to swap the drive gear over to get the correct wiper sweep - if that might help?

                  Cheers,
                  Mike.

Thanks Mike (have you managed to persuade them to give you Forum access at work after all then ?)

Do you know if the big saloons have a 14w or a 16w motor ? I think I'm sorted for now but the part I will need first would be the brush plate which, as I now understand, differs between the two motors.

                    Cheers

                      Hi Julian,

It's complicated, but I've found my 'other' PC (different network) now works, so...

I'll have a look at the ones I have and see what they are. I don't believe that Triumph would have used different ones on the saloons and Stag, only different ones in different years.

                      Cheers,
                      Mike.

Like they didn't use different grilles, chrome trims and about a hundred other identical looking items etc

                        Cheers

Yes, but the motors were made by Lucas (and fairly widespread) wheresas trim etc was unique (ish).

Anyway, who knows. I'll see which ones I have.

                          Cheers,
                          Mike.

If Phil Wardle on Lingen read this post: in case the said correct parts are no longer available is the remanufacturing a subject for SOCTFL?

We have far more technical queries about wiper systems than any other subject. These notes are based on an article written by Tony Stafford, the founder of Stafford Vehicle Components who retired in Spring 2001, having spent his working life in the Motor Industry.

                              1. Motor
The most popular type still available is the Lucas 14W. This is a two speed wiper motor, with self parking. Lucas did make a 16W type but as this was only used on Triumph Stags & Reliant Scimitars etc, and has now been dropped from the range. Make sure you use the correct base pad and strap with the rubber covering, and the motor is not touching any part of the vehicle body to eliminate noise.

                              Copied from SVS site
