Not so good for for an older car with worn thrust bearings

Oh bugger. Throttle stuck wide open and my cold engine flared to 7000rpm before I managed to switch it off. Really hope I haven't knackered my newly rebuilt engine. It starts and runs fine since. Be careful out there with the pedal down before choke out method.

The pedal only needs to go down about an inch to free the choke cam. Sounds like you had a lucky escape!

Not related though surly meaning that if the throttle stuck wide open it would have done it choke or not. Would have been even more exiting if you had been driving it

Check your choke cable at the carb end, If full throttle is used the end of the cable can foul the linkage and hold the throttle open if it is frayed or not straight. Guess how I know that when approaching a roundabout

I still need to investigate how it jammed. I'll check the choke cable foul, thanks Bob. Agree it would have probably jammed under normal operation. It was just a bit of a brown trouser moment for a freshly rebuilt engine.
