    Choke

Sorry to bug you all again.

I adapted well to my first Stag which I owned between 1987-1992.

My memory isn't all that good these days, and I've forgotten the choke protocol after acquiring my recent purchase.

I pull the choke right out to start it, and to be fair it seems as though I can push it back in completely within 3 minutes of driving off.

At the moment I run it for a minute or so on full choke, then I depress it halfway to drive off and within 2 minutes (i.e. once I've built up speed on the highway) I push it right back in and at the moment this seems just fine (bear in mind the ambient air temperature is always at least 5 degrees - I'd never take her out in freezing temperatures).

What is the accepted etiquette for this? I don't like the fumes and the high revs with the choke employed. Should I be pushing it in earlier?

Manual chokes are very much a thing of the past so I've lost my instinct on this.

Any advice would be most welcome.

    Thanks.

Only use enough choke to start the car, and then prevent the car stalling or bogging . Any more is a waste of fuel, and will increase engine wear.

This usually means, on a cold day with cold engine, full choke to start then push back about half or just enough to prevent stalling. Drive off asap, then within a minute or so push in again either to 1/4 or completely if it will take it.

    Others may see it differently.

Don't those in the know also recommend pressing the accelerator when pulling out the choke or did I dream that?

No, you're quite right - it relieves the load on the choke cable etc.

          Cheers

Every Stag is going to have different characteristics I would have thought, I know the half a dozen or so that I have driven have. How much or how little choke and when is going to vary between cars and the time of year. So I would say there is no right or wrong way, just what the car needs and how good the driver is in recognizing and reacting to that.

Cold start needs full choke on mine, hold the key to crank and at the count of 3 it starts. Push choke in immediately to one third and it's ready to drive.

Within a mile or 2 to 3 minutes running, the choke can be pushed right in and it will idle (and mine is auto) if you pull up at a junction. I know it's not set rich as I get up to 30mpg.

Fully endorse the pressing of the throttle when pulling out the choke, as not only are the cables a pain to change and bloody expensive to buy, the current replacements are nowhere near as the original.

No need to apologise Russ. I was just pointing out that there are two similar threads running at the same time.

Nice to to see you back here again......
