    Bad bad friday

When to Gaydon today ,to get out of SWMBO 's hair ,came back via Southam ,then just before Baginton Airport on the A45 ,ZERO CLUTCH

Two young lads in their 20's, stopped and pushed me from the middle lane over to the side

Pedal very spongy ,no resistance .Peter James breakdown gave a first class service ,home within the hour .

everywhere closed for easter,I don't suppose Halford's stock the bits

think it's time for all new hydraulics

    Bad luck, Alex.

Hope it is hydraulics and not the release fork pin snapped.

What a pain. Lucky someone stopped to help most times people walk or drive on by.

Having way in the past having sufferred the same problem (I think on a Wolseley 6/90 in around 1964!) I always remember the help a stranger offerred me at the time. Without the clutch it should be possible to engage a gear (The lower the better). It is then possible to pull the car off the road on the starter motor which may even start the engine in the process. To stop just pull the gear lever to neutral. It may be possible to limp the car home if the road is flat by using the starter motor in second or third with the engine hopefully firing up. Once rolling clutchless gear changes are possible with care. My father who in his lifetime drove everthing from 150cc motorbikes via tanks to tank transporters never used the clutch except to start in first gear.

          That is a serious PITA.

God knows how many times I have come home clutchless in various Triumphs over the years due to fluid loss, fortunately I have always made it back with starting in gear and clutchless gear changes, but not something you can do in traffic for long!

This is the reason I never re seal old cylinders any more, they never lasted long. Hope it is a hydraulic problem and not the previously mentioned cross shaft pin.

the symptoms were all ok ,then third slightly nochey (only using 3 rd and 4th on fast a road) then a little more difficult ,then when I stopped in traffic no gears at all, looked in the clutch reservoir half full. fingers crossed for hydraulics ?

              Oh Dear.

If the reservoir still has fluid in it, then cross shaft pin is more likely. Best of luck!

Before you order / fit new parts, get someone to operate the pedal and see what is moving or not? if it is the pin, why change the hydraulics?

You should be able to see the fork arm moving when the pedal is pressed. Put some resistance against it and if it overcomes it without the pedal sinking then the hydraulic side of things are OK

Thanks for all the help ,
went under this morning ,no leaks rod moves even under pressure of me and a plank! with no loss of pressure so it appears it's the box out job,

apart from the three piece kit what else should i change whilst I'm in there? and is it ? a broken pin or shaft .a part number would be great (never changed a stag
clutch before so I'm in the dark )

Sorry to hear that Alex, but it was what I suspected. BTDT early on in my 1st Stag ownership . As suggested above, I drove mine home using starter and clutch less changes.

I would get in touch with Russ (Kryten). He has done loads of them and can talk you through removing the broken pin without sacrificing the fork or shaft. Good luck.

is the shaft (150709) the prime suspect? that fits into (106709) the fork?

Tell me about it..... I went through the same as you 20-odd years ago. Same symptoms, so I ordered a hydraulic seal kit, changed the slave seals and no joy. Pulled the gearbox - lying on my back with the front wheels on low DIY maintenance ramps. Replaced the clutch, put the box back in and still no joy. Pulled the 'box again and found the fork pin had snapped. This was before such things as internet existed for me, so I was flying blind. I cut the fork off the cross-shaft using a grinding disc and had to buy a new fork as well as pin. At least you have the benefit of this forum to help you do it right first time......
