The photo's actually make it look better than it is - 115,000 miles (15,000 on the clock) CD model (top of the range - electric windows all round and velour seats) only 4 previous owners. No history to speak of but it was cheap and local with a new MOT and recent cam belt change.

It's surprisingly nice to drive and quite nippy.

          Wow !!!

I haven't seen an Acclaim in years, the first car I bought was a 'Y' Acclaim HLS in Silver and ran it for 4 utterly faultless years between '88 and '92. It was soo uncool as a teenager but cheap to run, fairly nippy and well appointed. IIRC the twin 'Kehin' motorcycle carbs can fetch more alone than most Acclaims used to make.

It was eventually replaced by a 'E' Rover 216 Vitesse efi, still uncool with work mates but a lovely car in black - fast and v cheap to insure as a 22 year old

ps. the geek in me spotted the 'CD' by the chrome bumpers and wheel trims (before even seeing the boot badge)

pps. I often wonder what would've happen if BL has also sold their version of the equivalent Honda Civic hatchback - I'm sure that would been a chart topper ! But I guess with the new Metro and Maestro it would've fallen between those models in size which needed to be successes.

So did I, here's a Honda Accord. 6 days ago I would have thought kit was a windup! It did use Honda bits though.

the Honda Ballade was the direct clone for the Acclaim, most reliable Triumph ever?

Wasn't it the other way round, the Triumph was a Honda like the Rover 600 and Honda Leg End

Have to say the Rover 618i we had virtually from new was faultless and never missed a beat but I suppose it was a Honda really

Yep, the Acclaim was a UK built Honda Ballade with some BL tweaks - largest being Ford Cortina seat frames being used to give a bit more internal space - oh, & those twin bike carbs !

The next Honda Ballade was also the base for the 1st generation Rover 200 which was essentially a MK2 Acclaim. However with the Honda agreement already in place, BL had much more input into the base design and it's own tweaks.

I recently had a 2000 Honda Civic 1.4 and my Son-in-Law has a 1998 Rover 420. These are virtually the same car except that mine had a Honda engine and his has the 2.0 T-series Rover engine. His also has leather seats, but mine had velour. Nice cars to drive and his Rover is quite rapid. Only sold mine because it had done over 150,000 miles and both drive shafts were knackered.
