    Water pump cage removal

Water pump cage.jpgFurther to a previous string, my cylinder heads are now off and are being overhauled. Thanks to all those who helped. The water pump is out, but a little problem has cropped up with regard removal of the water pump brass cage which was left behind and is stuck fast in the block. I was advised removal will require a slide hammer. I have borrowed a slide hammer, but so far the piece is still stuck firm. Maybe it’s just a case of ‘Don’t force it lad – use a bigger hammer’
Can anyone recommend a tool, or let me know their own experience at removal of this remaining brass part?
    see attached pic.

You could knock up a puller with a piece flat bar and a couple of bit of threaded rod made into hooks tighten up with a couple of nuts.

Thanks. Having just made up two heavy duty screw jacks to pull off my cylinder heads, it had already gone through my mind whilst trying to pull this brass cage out that I need to make up something rather similar and that works using much the same principles. Anyone been there before and got one I can borrow please??

Most slide-hammers come with an assortment of 'fingers', once you have selected the ones that sit well in the recesses of the cage it come out, never known one need more than that.

          Pump cage still stuck tight

          Thanks Andy,
Am doing this for the first time, so lacking both confidence and experience. Have made up today a crude screw type cage puller. Using a big spanner, piled on some considerable upward weight, albeit at a slight angle, so not ideal at all. Did not over push(pull?) my luck using this deviceStill stuck fast at the moment
So, have been wondering if I just need a heavier duty slide hammer.

I used one of these from eBay and it shifted mine, which was also firmly stuck

I threw the ridiculous pump away and fitted the daddy pump. Are you sure you want to fit a proved weakness back to the car when you have a chance to change. just a thought.

                Hi Tony,

Are you sorted yet ? If not, and whilst only as a last resort, you could use a cold chisel to break up the cage. Be very careful though - I have come across a block that was cracked in this area from, I would presume, somebody doing this in a very clumsy way. A good sideways blow to the top part should do the trick.

Having said that, I've always been able to get the cage out, eventually, with a slide hammer so good luck with this.

                Cheers

I have a homemade tool to do that very job over here near m25 j6 - no hammering, no damage to cage or block. If you want to borrow it, pop over. PM for address if you need it. I work from home so about all day.

                    re Water pump cage removal

Thanks to everyone with responses to my problem:-
Andy - My small amount of engineering common sense tells me I need an even upward pull in at least two places, rather than just one, which might cause a locking up tendency of the cage.
Knockwurst - I’ll look at your mentioned ‘ axle slide hammer’ on ebay and consider. I’m also considering Rimmer’s pump removal tool(RB7009P) but a little unhappy with several aspects of it.
Julian - Still not out, but I’ll butcher it out as a very last resort.
Edd - I am a little bit of a ‘purist’ and only change from the original fitting when an obvious improvement or upgrade is apparent. The Stag pump has an understandable bad name due to a glut on the market of improperly hardened pump skew gears which are undistinguishable when new.
Russ, Thanks for your offer, which I might take you up on, as I have this fear of buying a slide hammer and still not getting it out. I may be in touch soon.
                    Again thanks to all,
                    Tony Triumph

With many thanks I have borrowed kryten's cage removal tool and this has got it out. I did have to put quite a lot of weight on the 9/16" spanner to get it to move and feel this was the best way of dealing with the problem. In my case it would have needed a heavy duty slide hammer to have shifted it. Thanks to all who helped me with this.
Right, now to turn my attention to that seemingly seized pulley bolt!

                            Alan,
Very many thanks for your offer of help which is well noted! To bring you up to date, I have been loaned by kryten, a proper air powered bolt removal tool. At the moment I am trying to source an adaptor so I can hook it up to my own SIP compressor. Kryten has also fed me with other useful and interesting information about potential problems linked to pulley bolt removal.
When I have given this tool a chance to do its stuff, I will report back on my other post ‘crank shaft pulley bolt removal tool’
                            Thks again,
                            Tony.
