    Voltage Stabiliser?

Gents, sometimes my Temp gauge and fuel gauge fail to work, after 10-15 minutes they'll start but i'm sure they read too low.

Would this be the voltage stabiliser? If so, where is it?

    Thanks

    Jason

        Jason,

Sounds like this is the problem. You will find it attached to the back of the speedometer case. There are modern, solid state versions available now which are a bit more stable, Find them on ebay, or they are not difficult to make for a couple of pounds.

Do a search for LM2940T Regulator. You need the 10v version. Cut off the centre 'Ground' leg. Solder wires onto the Input and Output legs and crimp connections onto these wires after shrink wrapping to isolate the legs. Use the 'Ground' tab to secure it to the back of the speedo.

          Hi Jason,

I got my LM2940T regulator from RS Components, and it works extremely well, with no gauge fluctuations at all.

This is a pic of the original regulator on the back of the speedo, it is the small metal box with the green wires attached to it. It is attached by the screw you can see to the left of it.

Dave, cant remember how many gauges/intruments the original voltage stabalizer serves, would I need a little LM2940T Regulator for each instument, its not a question of cost but configuration,as I might be tempted to try and make my own as you suggest, need some soldering practice anyway !

                How many would I need?

you only need one voltage stabiliser, it serves fuel and temp gauges

Hi Andy, does that mean you have to attatch multiple connections to it,as I say I cannot remember how many instruments the original serves.

Does the modern unit do away with the old or does it run through it so to speak?

Any chance of a brief explanation /diagram on how to fit,

                      Sorry Iam an elecrtronics beginner

                        Mark,

There is only one Voltage Stabiliser. It is mounted on the rear of the tacho and feeds the fuel and temp guages.

Just replace the old mechanical one with a modern electronic one. There are two connections, plus the mounting which is the earth.

Dave, thanks am sorry,do appreciate your patience.

I have come a long way, just not electrically, although did manage to fit my own clock in ashtray !

This goes on from fitting a electronic flasher unit which is a great improvement but now my amp guage flicks from left to right when the indicators are operated,I thought a new volt reg would sort this but if it only regulates the fuel and temp gauge I am not so sure.

                          Any comment?

Will probably fit one anyway as it seems a good low cost mod like the flasher unit.

                          Regards Mark
