    How's your ignition switch?

Ten days ago I decided to change the old ignition switch as it was becoming increasingly difficult to start (yes I checked wiring, solenoid etc). The "new improved design" - bare switch without harness 218500NH - took me a while to fit (Haynes misleading) - it worked better for a while but then failed. The second switch worked perfectly after fitting, firing first time as it should, but ever since it has become less so, requiring several attempts to turn the starter, sometimes by holding the key tight against the spring or even waggling the key. This to me sounds like poor contacts - but please let me know if anyone else has had problems with this "new" design. Or maybe it's just me.

Incidentally though it comes in a familiar Lucas green box I am told that someone bought the rights to the box - the contents may have possibly been made in Shanghai.

If I get disillusioned again I think I'll move outside the Stag community and buy from a Land Rover dealership as the same part is used in early Landys.

The same lock/switch assembly was used in a lot of other Triumph cars of the era and I certainly have a number of (S/H) spares from the big saloon range if you'd like to try one. The loom and plug end might be different for the Stag, but it's not exactly rocket science to change over the cabling bit.

    Cheers,
    Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!

That's very kind. I'll bear that in mind.

I've got a new old stock Mark II switch going for free if it's any use. It came with a new old stock ignition lock that I used but as mine's a Mark I the switch with the contacts in is different.

It's been sat in my desk for 2 years and is free to a new home. I've now got 2 requests for it though (via PM).
Just to be clear though this is the ignition switch that the key mechanism turns and is located at the top of the column- not at the relay end.
My lack of technical knowledge may have misinterpreted what is needed.
            Chris.

'Lucas' boxes aren't worth the orange/green ink that they are printed with or the cardboard they are printed on. same often goes for the contents. Similar story with AP / Lockheed / Borg&Beck boxes.

In the 90's when jaguar launched the xk8 to north america, the advert, a full 2 page simply read 'At Last, a Jaguar with no Lucas parts!'

I recently had to replace a trw / lucas branded brake master cylinder which expired after 30 strokes (pun intended) ~ original was over 40 years old.

Most of the items Landrover will be currently supplying will also be coming from LCC's as far as I'm aware.

However not all LCC made parts are bad.

I had a few short lived rebuilt alternators from a 'stag parts supplier', now real warranty was forthcoming, so i cut my losses and took the original to be rebuilt locally. The auto electrical shop said they could rebuild for £75 or supply new for £59 inc. They said the source was far east, & recommended them over rebuilt.....I took their advice & its been fine for a few years now

Anybody know a tried & tested good source for stag ign switches?

If all else fails you can try this:-
