    Stainless exhaust weirdness

I spent a fun morning underneath the Stag, taking off the stainless exhaust and putting it back on again.

    "Why?", I hear you ask.

Well, since I bought the car a couple of months ago the exhaust has been leaking. I know because I could hear it, and when we put the car on a lift to look at the propshaft, I could see the black soot marks where the leaks were.

No, here's the oddity. The leakage was mainly from the joint between the RH header pipe and the silencer, because the inlet pipe to the silencer had been expanded by the makers to accept a larger header pipe size. The exhaust fitter had put a metal shim in there to make up the gap, but it was loose and not sealing properly. I re-made the shim and re-assembled the exhaust with a suitable assembly compound so that now it doesn't leak.

That leads me to wondering if there was a difference in exhaust header pipes in different models of Stag - have I got a silencer from a later model for instance?

What's the opinion about the best stainless exhaust system? I'm not taking about just the longest-lasting, I also want to know which ones fit just like the original. Oh, and does anyone know if the original fitment exhaust clamps are available for the joint where the system passes through the rear subframe? It's a pain to stop the pipes knocking if you don't use the original mount.

I would think you have a system that has been made by different manufacturers/suppliers they in turn have used slightly different diameter pipes.
I understand there are some differences in the bends in the exhaust systems as far as manual gearbox, or the automatic is concerned, but not aware of a difference in diameter, also the Mk1 had larger bore outlets than the Mk11.

I thought that might be the case, but both silencers have the same manufacturers label on, although neither is readable!
