    Registered as Wrong Colour???

I was not surprised to find when I got copies of the registration documents that in it's 39 years it had had a colour change along the way.

Originally registered as a Damson Red. Then after about 10 years changed to Pimento Red.

All exposed surfaces engine bay and boot sprayed so looking good.

My suspicion was aroused when I saw That Damson was not an original colour for '76.

I checked the body plate and it shows code 72 Pimento Red.

So either the body plate was changed when it was painted or it was registered originally with wrong colour?

    Anyone heard of either?

Probably not an unusual occurrence. When I bought my 1973 Stag two years ago, it was Pimento Red - registration documents showed it should have been Sienna Brown. PO had it for 13 years and had always known it as red but had not bothered to change the colour with the DVLA. The body plate still showed the code for Sienna Brown but as I was going to have a bare metal re-spray done I decided to change to Brooklands Green. Once back on the road - and by then Tax exempt - notified the DVLA of the colour change to green; no problems.

The V5 normally only shows a straight colour, ie red, green ,yellow or such like, or have you got a heritage certificate that notes the colour as well as the paint code?.

As far as I know Damson was only available on the Mk1 Stag

Generally speaking the paint code on the plate matches the colour it left the factory, I have never heard of one that didn't, but I have also heard of various models of Triumph having special order paint colours, but I have no idea whether the chassis plate would be specially stamped for such an order?

It is not unusual for Stags to have had their colour changed (particularly brown ones), and it was (is)? possible to buy blank chassis plates and stamp them up with whatever numbers took your fancy. The trim code is also on the chassis plate. If the paint code and trim code don't match the colours fitted to the car there is always the possibility the car is a bitsa, or has been nicked or ringed in the past, both very common with the Stag I am afraid!
