    Door trim.

The chrome strip with the piece of rubber that fits the tops of the doors on the outside.

My driver's door has clips on the door to hold this trim on but the passenger door has nothing so the trim just sits in place.

Anybody else come across this or has a PO fitted a new skin without the clips?

    Jeff.

    Jeff.

They should have the clips which can be a pain to fit, there is a tool for it. I made one a long while back. it's basically a flat bar bent into a U shape so you can pull the clips up from underneath whilst hold the trim in place.

    Like this. RX1562.jpg

Pain about the door card clips, it'll be shame if you have to resort to self tappers.

      Thanks Ian,

I remember now why it was going to take so long to put this thing back together, I hate working on old cars!

Taken me an hour to put the grille back on and still not finished.

Jeff. I bought one of those tool, useless unless you remove the window glass. I ended up using black silicon to fit mine. It worked well and looked pretty good. It even gave me a fight when I needed to remove the trim again

That sounds like you've been taking lots of tea breaks, Jeff.

Try cutting small squares from an old milk or butter carton. Make a small hole in the middle and use them to fix the screws to the grille brackets. Then you can offer the grille sections up to the front panel with the screws already in place, locate the screws and screw them in. The job only takes a few minutes that way.

Jeff I love that tool it worked great for me. It's a bit of a knack of choosing the widest part of the door too feed in the tool plus a made a little wood wedge just to shift the window and panel enough to insert and remove. Tricky but it works. On the end of the trim where it goes in between the 1/4 light window they pop up. To solve this I put a couple of v,s in the section so it has more give to flow with the contour of the car. I did spot the end with black silicone.

+1, the one I made up did the job perfectly, I made the U shape bit a perfect fit to the clips so it went through the gap quite easily

Think I'll cheat and use silicon for the trim as suggested by Jason, thanks boys. Just bought a new tube for the chrome strips.

Knew you'd mention it. I quite like the look of it without plus it will keep people guessing what car it is.

I've removed it and replaced it before and never had a problem but this time I just couldn't get the screws in plus 2 of the plastic keep nuts were missing so had to fit spiers clips, not easy reaching through the vent.

One end piece seemed too big and wouldn't fit in the space, yet it came out of there! Kept fowling on the chrome strip. Plus popping in on the forum and a walk around the garden to keep calm all took up the 1 hour.

Dave and Dave, did you leave the cardboard bits in place?
