I have Hankook Optimo K715 185/80-14 tyres on both the Stag and PI. They are car tyres and seem to have a good grip and noise rating. I wasn't too bothered about wear as I suspect they will time expire rather than wear out!
Cheers,
Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!
The conversion to size 1957014 on original wheels seems to be popular and from 175x14 (82) this results in a reduction in diameter of about 2.4 % which is just within the generally recommended limit of +/- 2.5% To make this same conversion from 184x14(82) the result is minus about 4.6 %.
I'm a bit confused about this. Does anyone know if anything else changed about the car when the standard tyre changed to 175x14 from 185x14 ? If not then I presume it makes no difference what tyres were originally fitted. If something else did change at the same time, does anyone know when it changed ? I am looking into changing my tyres (and wheels) and was considering 195 70 14 as the choice is greater. A 4.6% difference seems quite a lot if my original tyres were 185x14 but 2.4% doesn't seem so bad if they were originally 175x14. My car is early 73 mk2

In James Taylor's noted book it states:
"The Triumph Stag was always fitted with 14in wheels with a 5.5in rim width. The original tyres for all markets except the USA up to January 1973 were 185 HR 14 Michelin XAS tubeless radials; thereafter, Avon tubeless radials of the same size were also fitted. In March 1973 approximately, a batch of 30 UK-market cars was fitted with the Goodyear G800 Grand Prix 185/70 HR 14 tyres normally supplied only on Federal Stags. This appears to have been an emergency measure to overcome a shortfall in tyre supplies. Recommended pressures with all types were 26psi (1.8 bar) at the front and 30psi (2.1 bar) at the rear."
Towards the end of production Stags were apparently fitted with 175 HR 14 tyres, but this is not recorded in the above book.

Great. Thanks for the info. I will look for a comparison with 185 82 14 then. Looks like another option is 205/70R14. More limited in choice than 195/70R14, but closer to the original diameter.
Mine is a 77 and the handbook states 175HR14 as you say. Also I checked the speedo against a sat nav and it was spot on. Now on 19570HR14 which is within the 2.5% recommendation.

That is very curious. Why would the Federal market cars have been fitted with a 70 profile and the UK market fitted with an 82 profile? Also not sure what was fitted by the factory to the ones that came over here to Australia and some of the other export markets.
Also with no suspension changes throughout its life it does sound like that with the change to the BW65 the drop in tyre width may have been just a supplier issue or a factory 'rationalisation' to bring this model in line with some of the others on he production lines. Michelin have a reasonable reproduction offering of some of their old models. Including the XAS but not in a 185 14!

Dead chuffed to have won some unused minator 15X5.5 wheels with anthracite centres on Ebay. Now to choose some tyres.
It looks like the most readily available tyres that are within 2.5% of the original 185 82 R14 are 205 65 R15.
Does anyone have 65 profiles on 15" on their stag. If so do they look OK ? Any pics would be great !
My choices look to be...
195 70 R15 = 0.76% smaller diameter
- mostly only van tyres but I have found Yokohama A Drive or Bridgestone B330 in a car tyre - but only a T rating at £67
205 70 R15 = 1.37% bigger diameter
- Mainly 4x4 tyres in this size but Blackcircles have H rated "value" car tyres at £52, or MyTyres have Nankangs and Nexens at £58
205 65 R15 = 1.67% smaller diameter
Loads to choose from at this size, but will the slightly smaller tyre with 65 profile look any good ?
If I went for this size I would probably go for Falken Ziex ZE914 EcoRun which has superb reviews at £63
I went for 195/65/VR15 on my my Minilite replicas. They are just a wee bit smaller in circumference to the original Mk II so at an indicated 60 the speed is 58.4. If my wheel nuts arrive tomorrow and the weather is fair, I'll see if I can get them fitted and take pics. I chose Dunlop Sport Blue Response. Fuel economy B, A for braking in the wet and 68dB noise. £61.03 online price at ATS.
The percentage difference in size you quote I'd doubt you would be able to see.
Hi chaps,
Just a little update on the tyres I bought last year at a very reasonable price,
I am very pleased with them, they give enough grip and a comfortable ride, they have been tested quite a few times--ever noticed people pulling out in front of you--do they think ''it's an old car it's bound to be going slow'' or is it because the Stag is a little narrower than most modern cars, does it look further away?
These are what I bought-
WESTLAKE SP06 88T 175/TR14 T 88 4 £43.40 £173.60
Free tyre guarantee 4 £0.00 £0.00
vc8dun -£13.89 -£13.89

Total £159.71

Thanks for the tip. ATS do seem to have some good prices. I had more or less ruled out 195/65R15 as they are 3.8% smaller than standard tyres which seems to be too far from the recommended. I'd like to see the pics when you have some though as there is a big difference in price for that size. Have you already bought the tyres as BlackCircles do those in that size fitted for £50.48, and they have the the falkens I had my eye on at £49.48 - nearly £60 cheaper for a set of 4 than the same tyre at 205/65R15
Do you need different wheel nuts for minilite type wheels then ? I assumed I could use the chrome ones I have for the stag. They are the ones with the thick aluminium washer.

My Stag wheel nuts are for the original alloys and they have a sleeve on them that fit inside the stud holes. The Minilite wheels I have need a taper on the nut as the stud holes are just large enough fro the studs to fit through. I can't comment on your nuts (ahem )
