Master brake cylinder - refurbish or renew?

I now have a brake pedal that goes to the floor and I suspect my master brake cylinder (the fluid level hasn't dropped and no sign of leakage at the wheel cylinders).

A new master cylinders is £160 ish, but there's a firm on eBay that will refurbish yours for £34 (5 day turnaround). Anybody had any dealings with them?

    Cheers

    Peter

Peter, I have the same problem however I am going down the LD Parts route with a reconditioned master cylinder with a stainless steel insert. Only problem is that they say to allow 21 days? I'm sure that will be worst case scenario. Terry

I don't think they sleeve it though. So you are reliant on them ensuring that the bore is corrosion and score free. If they just clean it up / hone it and shove in some new seals its unlikely to last very long unless it's nothing less than perfect regards the bore. There is nothing wrong with resealing a Master Cylinder as long as the bore is good. It was normal practice many years ago. But ours are all 40 years old now or cheap Chinese copies made poorly to a price instead of a standard. You get what you pay for Peter.

I have honed mine myself and replaced the seals. Good info on the web on how to dismantle the master cylinder as there are a few tricks! Hardest part was bleeding the system after rebuild. Ended up bench priming the MC before fitting to the car. Far cheaper option if you are handy. Just need to ensure there is no pitting in the bore and then monitor fluid levels a little more regularly at first.

I don't think he keeps any in stock. In the description he says:

PLEASE NOTE these are only supplied against your used item received in advance.
When sending your old Master cylinder to us please wrap in several plastic bags prior to boxing.
                Please send to.........

Not convenient if you don't have a spare to send.

I did read that Dave but it says something about being put on a mailing list for when they are available, didn't it?

                    Peter

Check out EJ Ward, mine failed last year and I got a new (TRW parts one I think?) from E J Ward for less than £160!
Collected it myself, fitted it same day with SWMBO helping me bleed it, all done and dusted.

p.s. OK, just noted no-one seems to like the TRW cylinders on other threads? Mine's been fine since last June, but I still have the old one just in case.
