Warning Gauge / oil pressure light - Advise please

    Hi ,
Would appreciate some advise , just realised that my oil pressure light doesn't come on when I switch on , so wanted to start by checking out the bulb , first issue , have disconnected the multi pin , but can't seem to remove the actual gauge , it's a late Mk2 , with a sort of spring loaded band around the circumference which seems to hold it in . Have tried a feel gentle tugs & twists , but nothing seems to happen , can only assume there is a trick / hidden catch , can someone let me into the secret please. Secondly and getting back to the main issue are there any other things I should be checking ?
    Cheers

The trick is that the clip turns.
It should have some slots, line up and Bobs yer uncle. In bits as above.......simples

It might be the sender. Try earthing the wire at the sender end to see if the light comes on.

Twisted , this way that way and finally pop it was out , opened up the gauge ... oil , park brake & choke all look burnt out , so I think a trip out to see if I can get replacements , might as well do the lot ... all 8 ,I gather from a bit of research - GLB280 12V 1.5W.. wish me luck , somehow I don't have much hope in Halfords , it may well be I need to order them . .... Cheers

If you do need to order then these people have a very good range of bulbs.

I bet the bulbs look black? Just one thing to note, I have found that the screw thread on some of those replacement bulbs are too large and dont fit too well.

Me too. I spent bloody hours fractionally increasing the hole size to get them to fit

                Cheers

Yep , the bulbs are black , I could I suppose have checked by swapping with the known good bulbs , the only ones I know are good are indicators & fuel , however I think after what could be 30 years a complete new set is deserved . I'll keep the 3 known good ones as spares . Bulbs ordered ,so lets see what I get and how well they fit . Oh whilst I wait I plan to paint the inside of the cluster case white , see if I can't improve the brightness by upping the reflection , can't hurt and will keep me occupied .
                  Thanks again

Mine was the sender. What a pain to change as had oil pressure gauge as well. Not much room back there to wield a spanner...

Hope not , as I fitted a new dual gauge and recall it was very tight , even tighter I gather on an automatic , which is what I have , keeping my fingers crossed - Steve

This is what I've found usually does the trick for removing the oil pressure sender - with or without an adapter.

                        Cheers

Wish I'd known that when I changed mine on an auto. Very slow progress with a small spanner and lots of bad language!! Nigel

                            Hi ,
Interesting tool , may well give it a try , hope to get the bulbs today or tomorrow , so we'll see. Am keen to get the oil pressure warning light working as I fear my oil pressure is too low , have a gauge that sees it drop down to 5 - 10 psi on hot idle, so getting the actual warning light to work is the start of a process of investigation , light / sender / gauge / oil pump .... and so on and so on , but I do fear , I have no reason to doubt the gauge , & could end up with a bottom end rebuild .... many ££££.....as it's really beyond my capability, The car only has 38k miles , but I fear not many on the motorway , a lot of town / choke may have lead to a quick demise.

What does the pressure rise to when driving

And what oil do you have in it.
