Headlight issues. Now you see me now you don't!!

My headlights have started playing up. When I switch on I get 2 dipped beams, if I go on main beam the offside is fine but the nearside dipped goes out(and the main does not come on). Going off main does not put the dipped beam back on. If I leave it off for a while and then switch on the dipped beam will come on.
I have checked both bulbs and they are fine, I have done a relay swop to the offside and they are fine, the earth wires are good. I have no headlamp flash at all off the column stalk on the nearside either. All was fine 2 weeks ago and nothing has been 'worked on' since then.
The rotary on/off switch appears to be fine - it won't be if I keep playing though. Likewise the stalk/arm appears to function but how can I test? Has anyone got any ideas?

have a look at the earths wire,or run a temporary wire from battery

I had something similar and the earths were to blame. Check all the bullet connectors around the lights. Mine need cleaning out. My headlights came on when I switched on the ignition!

Thanks guys, I've had another play with the earths and can now 'see the light'. Don't know which one it was, for the next time!, but they are now working fine.
