    WD40

We all use it but according to a recent email I received:

The product began from a search for arust
preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40
was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company.
Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement'compound.
They were successful with the fortiethformulation; thus WD-40 . The Corvair
Company bought it in bulk to protecttheir Atlas missile parts.

Ken East (one of the original founders) saysthere is nothing in WD-
40 that would hurt you...'It is made from fish oil.'

When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing
that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works
just as well as glass. Then try it on your stovetop. It is now
shinier than it has ever been before.

I worked for Xerox Corp in the 70's and we wanted 'WD40' to be part of our service engineer's standard kit. To allow its use we had to have a favourable independent test report confirming it had no health issues.

The lab report came back and it was full of medical 'mumbo jumbo' about the tests confirming it had no effect on skin, non toxic etc. But one paragraph said

'Mice were injected with x cc's of the substance into their blood stream causing fatality'

The printed report had already circulated half way around the office and some wag had hand written in the margin-

" But at least it stopped them squeaking!"

If it took 40 attempts to get WD40 right, maybe BL should have followed suit and tested the Stag out thoroughly until they got it right before releasing it. Maybe then the 1st production No. would not have been LD1 but LD41 or even LD401!

Maybe at one time. The MSDS now declare it to be made from 60-80% Petroleum Distillate. White Spirit to you and me.

It is only recently they managed to get the 'Marine Pollutant' label removed when transporting under the IMDG Code.
