I am having to wait for a heritage certificate before I can apply for Historic Tax for my Twin Plenum V8 Toledo.

It appears the dating letter I got some months ago is not sufficient, it has to be the full Heritage certificate with the embossed stamp that has to be sent off with the paperwork as it was registered on 1/1/75.

I am using its enforced idleness to rebuild the engine, I had a couple of oil leaks and low compression on one cylinder caused by a stuck ring. It turns out to have ported heads, that have been significantly skimmed for compression and what I suspect is an old WL9 motorsport cam and adjustable rockers which explains its raggedy idle.

Oddly it had been fitted with thick 3.9 gaskets, so I have used original tin ones which I calculate will give 10.4 compression now I have measured everything.

If it turns out I have fixed the noisy gearbox as well, I can feel another Megasquirt project coming on!

        Hi Neil

If the car was registered on the first day of the year then there should be no need for a heritage certificate as it is unlikely the car was built, registered and sold all on New Years Day! There is something on the DVLA website about cars before the 5 (?)th Jan being automatically being accepted as built the year before.

        Regards

Bruce, you'd like to think so but the first person I spoke to at the DVLA told me that just because my Stag was first registered in '74 was no proof that it was built before '75 !

            Cheers Mark.

I am just going by what the DVLA told me by email (it took several attempts to get a coherent answer).

I was hoping to do the same as my project Stag and just get it changed at the post office, but computer say NO!

The problem seems to be that someone at the DVLA has to change it on the database, and they do not want to oblige without the necessary paperwork.

Please refer to my previous post. If you have a V5C in your name and with all car details correct etc.,then DVLA say Post Office can change class to historic and tax car at zero there and then.

You may find the response is down to the procedural knowledge of the counter clerk. The first I dealt with did not know what to do and suggested I phone DVLA . I did phone them - they were polite and helpful and told me to go back to the Post Office and inform them they had to initiate the change in taxation class and if they did not agree then they should phone DVLA. Fortunately when I returned to the Post Office I got a different counter clerk who knew exactly what to do!

Sadly the guy I dealt with at the post office did know what he was doing, same guy who changed the tax class on my project Stag.

The difference is that whereas my project Stag was still under the PLG tax class as it had been off the road for 20 years, its 1972 registration date was on the database so the change to historic went straight through with no problems. The DVLA database does not have my Toledo on the Historic tax class simply because of its first registration date of 1/1/75. The only information held on the Database is normally the date of first registration, not the date of manufacture unless an attempt has been made to alter this.

I was relying on the fact that previously some people have had no problems changing tax class for early registered vehicles possibly because the system could be over ridden manually, but this year it appears to be different simply because nothing can be done unless the computer says yes. The guy at the post office said the only way he could get it into a zero tax class was to change its class to Invalid Carriage, but I ain't that knackered yet!

I took my V5 document to the post office on the 4th April. They gave me back the sections 9-12 page. The existing paid tax expires at the end of May and I have not had my V5 back. In fact last week I received a V11 tax reminder to pay again from 1st June. However the 16 digit code would not work on line and I could not get through to the DVLA on the phone and then I checked the tax status and it says my car is taxed until end of April 2016.

I guess they are just very busy and we need to be patient?

Edd - I was told it would take about 6 weeks. Mine came back within the last few days, so a bit sooner than I expected. Checking out the DVLA web site it is shown as taxed until 1st April 2016, and the V5 says it is an historic vehicle

Yipeeee it arrived today. Sorry for the fuss guys. It's amazing how postoffice staff seem to have no idea how the system works.
I even managed to change the colour at the same time.

All sounds so easy on the DVLA site, it suggests any date of first manufacture prior to 7th Jan each year the assumption is that it was manufactured the previous year (due to factory shutdowns). Shame nobody told the computer !
