Removable Sat Nav for use in Stag?

Not been on the Forum for a while, and just done a search without finding the results I wanted, but I quite fancy having a Sat Nav with the Islas Canarias featured on it, that I can use in the Stag whenever I go out in it exploring.

As my car is normally parked in the open, I don't want one that is readily visible, but is easy to attach & remove and that has a decent sized screen (my eyes {and other parts of me} are not as good as they were).

If I bought one in the U.K. and brought it back with me I wouldn't have to pay any VAT, although there has been a hint from one of our children that I could get one in my Xmas stocking, my son & daughter having clubbed together a couple of years ago to buy me a Samsung Galaxy 7" Tablet.

I have just retuened to Tenerife after 8 days in Chester (which was cold), and was dissappointed to hear that there had been a Classic Car parade in Chester City Centre the day before I arrived - were any forum members on here part of that?

Got most things I wanted to do attended to in Chester whilst there :-

#Had a hearing test & my hearing aids adjusted,
#Had a prostrate biopsy (my 3rd) the results I won't get back for another week,
#Topped up with vitamins (zinc & iron etc.) at Superdrug,
#Attended a friends Wedding in North Wales (but couldn't drink any alcohol because of the post biopsy anti-biotics I was on).

Now back home but not yet retrieved the Stag from the Garage were I parked it whilst away - but I am sure it will start on the first turn of the key, and I need it to go playing snooker in on Saturday - "what an amazing final in Sheffield by the way - I am glad Stuart Bingham won". Seen Jimmy White give an exhibition at the Bar where I play -
only wish I had a fraction of the professionals talent!.

Get the Tom Tom app for about £40 with ongoing free updates and the phone will rest vertcially in the coin tray Works a treat and it doesnt use any data at all unless you need traffic updates out there which doubt. This way you can never get lost as long as you have your phone with you.

Andrew - I don't possess a "smart" phone, only the old mobile type you use purely for making telephone calls or sending text messages. Never felt the need for a smart phone.

How about just using a navigation app (TomTom or one of the free ones available like MapFactor) on your 7" tablet. This is what I use and it props up nicely on the centre console.

I use the "Here Drive+" app on my Nokia phone. It ships with the phone and has extensive maps with free updates. Available on all Nokia Lumia phones, as far as I know, so if you're looking at upgrading to a smarter phone it might be worth considering...

Maybe I'll drop a hint about that - but to be honest I hardly ever use my existing mobile phone in Tenerife, and always forget to charge it up, so am woken up in the middle of night with it "beeping" to tell me the battery is flat (Why does the battery always go flat at 3am in the morning!?).

Don't use my Samsung Tablet much either, usually only on long haul flights to watch a film I have put on it.

Slightly off topic, but on our trip to the U.K. last week, as usual we hired a car at Manchester Airport (we always use Arnold Clark),
and each year it is a different pretty new small model, and each year there are more and more buttons and switches on the steering wheel and dashboard. It would probably have taken me all week to discover what they all do - so I didn't bother and just drove the car to Chester, Chorley, and Tatton Park on the Bank Holiday Monday, then back to the Airport on Tuesday. Car dashboards are looking more and more like the cockpit of an aeroplane these days!

                Hi
I agree I have the new mondeo and still working out what all the buttons do after 2 months. Not only that ,you tend to take your eye off the road when playing with them

Mobiles are ok whilst you get internet signal but I find it drops out too often to be reliable as satnav.

gps much more reliable, got a Navman from Argos a few years ago for about £70, not the best on the market but better than Waze and Google maps when on the road and I have tried both.

i will be upgrading soon and will probably go for Tom Tom as my processor is just a tad too slow when negotiating city roads, how do I know? just driven through Valencia and was a nightmare. Still gets you to your destination but with a bit of frustration thrown in.

                      Jeff.

I could be wrong but I think on my Iphone with the Waze free app it uses GPS

                          How?

Waze is a GPS-based geographical navigation application program for smartphones with GPS support and display screens which provides turn-by-turn information and user-submitted travel times and route details, downloading location-dependent information over mobile networks.

As far as l know Apple uses the network for its positioning. And an Android (Windows too ?) device can use its own inbuilt GPS antenna and not need a network connection which stops you having to be 'roaming' on another network. I use Sygic.

Waze and Google maps don't work in Spain.
