    BW 65 acting strangely

Anyone have any ideas on this please?

Yesterday I noticed a high pitched squeak from the gearbox area when travelling slowly, it was there for about 10 seconds and is speed related. It happened again today and I assumed it was the front universal joint on the propshaft. However, tonight I came to drive the car, put it in gear and got no drive. The engine is being loaded and the revs are dropping normally, but there is no drive to the wheels. It is as if the transmission lock in Park is not disengaging as the car seems to be locked solid (it wouldn't run down a slope). If I run through the gears a few times, so far I have got drive normally and the car drives as usual. It has done the same thing several times tonight.

My first thought was low fluid level, but this is correct. I ran it through the gears several times before checking it etc after an 18 mile drive.

Bizarre, and I don't want to get stranded! Has anyone else had this happen?

UPDATE...! I have just been investigating and I am almost certain that the transmission lock when P is selected is sticking in the engaged position. The car will not roll with N selected, and when it frees it goes with a hell of a bang !

Is it possible to get at the 'lock'? I wonder if it just needs freeing off?

    Regards
    Brian

      Hi Dave

Thanks for the reply, I have just checked the oil level and it is OK.

It seems that the transmission lock (or whatever it is called) is sticking.

      Thanks,
      Brian.

The linkage that engages/disengages the parking pawl, as I recall you can get to it by dropping the valve block. I cant get the squeak at low speed though, if you have a clutch slipping you would get flare up and that is more a scream than a squeak.

I've never had any experience of the BW65, but looking in the ROM it looks like once the Valve block is dropped you have access to the parking paw and it's mechanism and it shows a spring attached to it, so you maybe able to fix it without taking the box out .

                    Hi Staggard and Ian

Many thanks for the advice. It seems that the pawl is definitely sticking for some reason, I drove the car today and parked in N - it performed absolutely normally. And luckily it has a good handbrake!! Definitely some investigation needed here.

                    Thanks
                    Brian.

Just reading the ROM and the BW 35 box seems quite straightforward to remove, seemingly the bell housing does not need to be unbolted from the engine. Does anyone know if the 65 is the same?

                      Brian.

Brian, you need to stop and think here. As I have said if the parking pawl is sticking in because of a broken spring or linkage why are you talking about taking out the box. drain the oil remove the sump pan remove the valve block and you can get to the parking pawl mechanism. why make work for yourself.

                          Hi Staggard

I see what you mean, much easier than taking the box off! I have never worked on an auto box but I will give it a go. Still just using N at the moment!

                          Thanks
                          Brian.

Cleanliness is paramount. up on stands, drain the oil, if you drain it into a clean container you can reuse it, or take the opportunity to change it up to you. drop the sump pan and take photos before you drop the valve block. take photos as you go and if you come across a problem post them on here and them fellow members can help. Just a wild thought but the BW35 (and perhaps therefore the BW65) I am given to understand uses a totally different fluid to that commonly used with later autoboxes. What fluid are you using?

I am no expert in this area but some of the problems you describe are somewhat reminiscent of problems encountered on other forums with cars that also employ BW 35's where the incorrect fluid has been used.
