I'm wondering if anyone knows if you can get "split" gaiters to go on the front suspenson struts? I want to replace mine, but I don't want the faff of taking the front suspension legs off. You can get them for drive shafts, but I've not seen any suitable for the suspension. Optimistic I know...

I wouldn't get your hopes raised - I've never seensuch a thing. However, they're not difficult to replace. It seems like a major faff, but all you need is the usual spanners/sockets and a good spring compressor.

A more pressing problem has developed... I turned the key and...nothing. The lights dimmed, but that's it. Dead battery. I charged it up for an hour or so, and everything was back to normal, but next day... nothing again. It seems with the ignition off, something is drawing a bit over 3 amps and draining the battery. I'm thinking the alternator, or at least the diode pack in it, has thrown a fit. My car is a Mk1 and a half, with bits of both vintages together. Looking at the mess that passes for wiring down by the alternator, it originally had the Mk1 setup which was replaced with a MK2 alternator - wires chopped, but the original control boxes left in place. It all looks quite horrid. Assuming it IS an MK2 alternator, and it IS the diode pack knackered, are the diodes readily available, or am I looking at a whole alternator?
