    Rear wheel alignment

Hi. Members I have a question regarding the wheel alignment,my n/s wheel toes in more that my o/s wheel, a friend who is also a stag owner pointed out
this to me saying both n/s and o/s should be the same He showed me his car and said this is what they should be like.having had this brought to my attention
is this a job a competent person could carry out,

could be one of a couple things, there are shims on the brackets that hold the trailing arms on to the sub-frame, adding or taking a shim out with adjust toe. could be as simple as worn bushes too..

if you're OK with spanners then it should be an easy job, the hard bit will be measuring what's right and what's wrong!

You'll probably find that the holes in the rear arms (the box section ones) have become elongated. It's not unusual. The holes are where the large bolts that attach the arms to the diff fit.

If you do a search on here you should find more info about it. The easiest solution is probably to fit a replacement arm or arms, although it is possible renovate the arms and fit strengthening tubes.

      Cheers

Rear toe in changes with vertical travel so make sure your car is sitting level when measuring toe-in.

Rear toe-in should be zero, i.e. Wheels parallel. Shims are easy to fit or remove; just slacken the outer bolts enough.

just last year i went to kwik fit after fitting a new steering rack to get the alignment checked and set ,they had a brand new laser guided tracking system which checked all four wheels and they even had a ll the stag details on the database . the fronts were done and the rears were very slightly agog but left alone as i didn't have the shims required with me but I did get a pictorial read out with all the correction information displayed worth the £45 paid . may be worth a visit and bringing some spare shims .

Also bare in mind, its not just a case of getting the rear wheels correct in relation to each other, they should also be aligned with the front wheels else you will find your car crabbing, (an air force term for going forwards with your vehicle facing to one side).
When I did mine, I initially locked the steering rack with its locating bolt, then aligned both front wheels to the axis of the bodyshell along with correct tow in.
I then strung cotton around all four wheels so I could measure the gap between the cotton and the sidewall at the front of the rear tyres, and equalize the rear wheel toe in to the fronts.

Get a new pack of dental floss, put the front wheels straight as you can and then run around all four wheels so that the floss is touching the tyre rubber. Straighten the front wheels so that the floss is touching both sides of the tyre wall, then look at the back. It should be touching both sides of the tyre rubber if zero or slightly in at the front of the rear tyres if toeing in. Cheap check but of course, as an initial guide but may save your costs going somewhere when its all OK.

Only my opinion but have it checked properly on a gauge, the cost of checking accurately is far cheaper than replacing worn tyres they will not only check front to rear alignment but also that both axles are inline with each other (parallel)
