overdrive

I have a collapsed 'A' type overdrive on a 1976 car, unheard of and I would like to ask if a 'J' type, complete with gearbox, will fit straight on?
I can forward as much info as nec, but would really appreciate some help.

A J type box with overdrive is a straight swap.. If you had an A type, the chances are your car was an auto and was converted - a 1976 car would certainly have had a J type if it was built as a manual.

This is the right place to find stuff out Steve.....

Have a look at your commission plate in the passenger door shut - if it ends with BW, it would have had a BW35 auto, ends with A it was a BW65 auto, or ending O manual overdrive

You might need to change your exhaust Steve. I think there's a different profile on one of the pipes for A and J type OD

Yes thank you all. I have, as you all know, been busy fitting a 'new' to me gearbox. Its a j type, complete with overdrive, and went straight in.
how ever, the gearbox crossmember does not fit and the speedo drive does not fit. And I thought I would be going to work in the beast tomorow.

More trawling for more bits.

Ive ordered a new speedo cable. 108mm.
and I guess i will be bodging a crossmember.
