    Bouncing Speedo

    Hi All,

I have a bouncing speedo and after removing and lubricating the inner cable I struggled getting the inner back in. On getting underneath and detaching the gearbox end (BW35) I realised the angle the cable has to take from the transmission is quite acute, probably contributing to the bouncing needle.

I assumed their should be a a angle drive off the transmission but, according to the parts list I've looked at angle drives are only fitted to overdrive models.

Can anyone confirm if the BW 35 should have a angle drive or not?

    Thanks

    Nigel

when i took my BW35 out it didn't have a angle drive,i thought the angle drive was only used on manuals

if the ends of the cable are not warn, there is a speedo drive in the gearbox, but first try another speedo head

      Thanks.

Got another head to try but wanted to conform that a angle drive was not standard.

        Hi Nigel.
Have had the same problem as you. There is no angle drive on the 35 box. Tried different heads, new cables, all with disappointing results. One thing I did find is the gear on the output shaft is not a tight fit so moves on the shaft. Didn't want to take the box out for this and I also have a 3:4 diff, so I have fitted a smiths electronic speedo and made a sensor to fit the box. Hey presto, no wobble and accurate speedo/ mileometer and can be calibrated if different tyres are fitted. Totally cost about £200. A bit pricy, but no points on licence or fines!!!!

Hi Nigel. The adaptor is simplicity itself, now I know what to do!!! Just remove the end of the speedo cable that attaches to the gearbox. By holding the cable in a vice and pulling the end off. Cut the bit that sticks up fush and ensure that it is flat. You now have what is effectively a washer with a boss that fits into the gearbox as the standard cable fits. Take the sensor and remove the alloy threaded ferrule carefully, as you don't want to damage the workings ( it's mainly plastic)
Enlarge the hole in the washer to allow end of the sensor to locate(don't drill right through and try to use a spot weld drill or similar to have a flat bottom to the hole. This makes it easier to locate the sensor square to the washer. Use a good epoxy such as jb weld or similar, and bond the sensor onto the washer. Don't forget to make sure the fixing bracket will fit by opening out the end and when dry fit and wire up. Hope this helps, worked a treat for me. Pm me if you need a natter as my instructions may not be the best in the world. Dave

Hi Dave, the pictures wouldn't open, it refers to contacting admin if it was a valid link !

However, opened up speedo as I read that a build up of dust and solidified lubricant can contribute to this problem.

Held head face up and sprayed some carb cleaner on disc and gears, rebuilt it and tested and its perfect, never seen a steadier speedo.

Now, what lubricant if any should I apply ?

I have been told that sewing machine oil is probably best, but some have used 3 in 1 . Just use sparingly or crud will build up again and bu---r up the head again. Glad you got it sorted.

I think the remanufactured Smiths dials you just glue something to the propshaft, which seems a bit easier. Check out Holdens website http://www.holden.co.uk/displayAgrou...&pgName=Gauges

Yup. That is an option, but i didnt want anything to unbalance the prop or to drill holes in the floor to mount the brackets

Just my way of doing things, if there is an easy way to do it, find somthing to make it difficult!!!!!! far too much time on my hands!
