Stag bumped by a careless driver in Tesco car park - front bumber pushed back

As per title, was heading out of Tesco car park last night in the Stag, and a guy in an Audi A4 in front suddenly decided he did not want to stay in the line of traffic, did not see me, and proceeded to reverse straight into me - before I had the chance to sound the horn. Very frustrating to say the least!

The guy was very apologetic and does not want to go through insurance for the repair (however I've informed my insurer just in case!).

I think the bumper itself is okay and presume it's just the mounting brackets that have bent.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to repair? Rather than getting the damaged brackets straightened, would the best plan be just to get new brackets, then the repair would presumably just involve removing the bumper and re-fitting with the new brackets?

Take it to a body repairer who knows what they are doing and get a proper estimate.

Quite often the damage can be worse than it initially appears and, when you've settled and been paid you will have no recourse for extra damage found.

I've seen that happen so often and you finish up out of pocket.

Only problem with telling your insurance company (even if the other motorist pays privately for the repairs) Is you have now become a higher risk when it come to calculating your premium.

My Son had an accident in a car insured by me. He was a named driver, the claim has gone against me and is on my claim history now even though I wasn't even in the car at the time.

My motorcycle insurer also wanted to know about it, again as its claim with my name on it.

You cant win with insurance companies and where is the logic in me being a higher risk when I wasn't driving or in anyway involved

You don't have to inform your insurance just be absolutely sure as to the extent of the damage.

As I said quite often the damage can be worse than it first appears, remove the bumper that looks ok and it twists on release, and perhaps the bumper iron mounting are hiding damage.

As I said before, make sure you know what the damage is and what needs doing to put it properly right, it will probably be more expensive than you or Mr Audi think and he won't want to pay any more than you initially say.

I think you'll find under the terms of the insurance you are obliged to tell them, having said that If I was in the same position I'd think about it first.

It would be helpful if you had a passenger in the car at the time, or perhaps the name of another witness. It is not uncommon for the driver to say that it was you who drove into the back of him when he receives the bill/estimate.

Have you checked where the bumper bolts to the front wing? Its highly likely that if the your front brackets are bent then this area may well be dented or creased?
