    Fuel pump ticks

    Gent's

    Some advice please,

The fuel pump on my stag ticks and it seems to be getting louder, so I though as we are looking to take our stag off to France this year that I should be looking at replacing it.

However there seems to be a lot different types of replacement pumps on sale ? What type would you recommend and how easy would it be to fit it.

May I please say "thank you" now for any advice given. The last help I had with dash lights not working was brilliant and the fault was found in seconds,

    Regards Dean.

    Hi Dean
The pump should tick, it has a set of points in it that open and close as the pump mech operates the diaphram, think the tick actually comes from the diaphram operation rather than the points though. My pump packed in last week (stopped ticking and stopped pumping) so I replaced it with an electronic alternative from Rimmer Bros, it still has a tick but it's quieter. I fitted the Rimmers pump after cross referencing with LD Parts and needing the pump there and then as I was going away in the Stag.
The Rimmers pump was about £70 and was easy enough to fit following LD parts instructions, it's plastic bodied rather than metal and looks and feels of a lesser quality than the original. Have to point out that LD parts were out of stock so I wasn't doing them out of any business by using Rimmers and then using their instructions. I also tend to think if LD parts advocate an item it should be OK.
My Wife has a Morris Minor which is fitted with an electronic SU type pump which does look better made but it is on show under the bonnet. It ticks very loudly and is mounted on the bulkhead, I'm told the ticking is all part of the cars character
if I were you I would leave well alone but perhaps purchase a pump and carry it as a spare for peace of mind on your trip.

No ticks or too many ticks. Both = problems. I had a problem with tick over revs creeping up which I was told on the forum might be an air leak. By coincidence, I had my boot open yesterday and turned the ignition on without starting the engine and the pump ticked as usual, stopping when the carbs were primed as it should. However a few seconds later another couple of ticks, then another few seconds and it ticked again. With nowhere to go without the engine running I guessed it must have been leaking somewhere and true enough there was signs of fuel in the vee. I tightened all the under bonnet fuel pipe clips and the ticking after priming stopped. Also on starting the car and warming it up it looks like the rev problem has been solved as well. Forum advice proving correct once again, I guess a fuel leak is also an air leak. Still to take it out on a test run but fingers crossed. I replaced my original pump with an electronic one from Wards a couple of years ago because it sometime needed a tap to start it ticking. The first one they sent had a seepage problem but the replacement has been fine.

        Hi Dean,

Sorry that you didn't receive even more replies on this - somehow I missed it first time. I reckon Dave's advice is very good "if I were you I would leave well alone but perhaps purchase a pump and carry it as a spare for peace of mind on your trip"

I've also had petrol pump problems in the last year or so and I too am taking my Stag off to France, but in my case it's next week.

The original pump should tick quite vigorously when you first turn the ignition on but it should progressively get slower until it almost stops after maybe about 10 or 20 seconds. Thereafter it should click something like once every 5 to 15 seconds I guess - dependant on how much throttle you're giving it !

I replaced mine with an LDparts pump and have had all sorts of variations on the ticking however my car runs well and I don't have any leaks.

The pump, sort of, has two functions - to suck fuel up from the tank and then, obviously, to pump it to the carbs. If there is any air leak on the, short, suction side, then the pump could tick vigorously as it sucks in unwanted air as well as fuel, and if there is any leak on the numerous junctions to the carb then it will also pump vigorously but you will, of course, have fuel leaking somewhere. The final, and most common, problem is the float valves in the carburettors not shutting off properly and allowing excess fuel to enter the float chambers and then leak out.

Maybe your ticking is quite normal. If you're worried about it, I only live about 10 miles from Keynsham and you're welcome to come here so I could give you my opinion if you like (although not between next Wednesday and Sunday when I will (hopefully ) be in France.

        Cheers

        Julian

I fitted one of these when one of those plastic electronic pumps packed up. I have found this one well made and works brilliantly at the correct pressure.

That does look better quality than the plastic ones Graham and also looks identical to the one fitted to our moggie, if I hadent needed one in a hurry I would have gone for one of those.
            time will tell:-)
