    Fuel gauge not working

Took the Stag to work today. Noticed the fuel gauge was not working. Any tips on what to check?

Take the wire off the sender unit on the tank and earth it. If the gauge shows full after a minute or so then you need to replace the sender in the tank. That's assuming you had a good clean connection in the first place.

Graham - any luck with your fuel gauge - mine has gone to zero all the time too so was searching for a fault finding post.

Check the float it might be full of petrol which will cause it to sink to the bottom of the tank and show empty.
Cheap fix buy a new float and fit I found the wire that holds the float had a sharp point which caused the problem sorted away from car with a small file.

Hi had a wee look at the fuel sender wires then put the boot board back down !

The 2 wires as below - if I remember you would have the ignition on & ground one of the wires - well that was the temp sensor on my old TR7 - then gauge will either go to full ( I hope ) so that would tell me gauge is ok then next would be to have aloof at the float.

The 3rd Wire I assume (the black one) is the earth - what are the others to save me ploughing through the Manual wiring diagram.

Any pointer from any knowledgeable sparks

            Neil,

Green/Black wire goes to the fuel gauge (which should read full when this wire connected to chassis and empty when wire disconnected).
Black wire goes to the chassis ground.
Green/Orange wire goes to the low fuel light (which should come on if this wire is connected to chassis).

Disconnect the green/black wire and with the ignition on a voltmeter from this wire to the chassis should read 10Volts if the voltage regulator is working.
Disconnect the green/orange wire ans a voltmeter from this wire to chassis should read 12V if the warning lamp is working.

            Simon

PS both the above voltage checks need the ignition to be on.

The float degenerates and fills with petrol. Mine came like that and the vendor sent me a new one. A really easy fix (even for me).

                    Hi Simon,
Carried out all the tests you suggested & all is working - the pesky float had a small hole in - looks like a common fault - sharp bit on arm as previous posts.

Once again thanks - now can rest easy the voltage stabiliser is ok therefore the temp gauge too

Next one - where can you just get a float for the Fuel Tank Sender Unit - don't want to buy a complete unit

Have you tried mending the one you have? Dry it out and then carefully weld over the hole with a soldering iron. Worth a try.

That's what I did, and then turned it around so that the other end of the float was in the metal bracket. Should be good for another 40 years now!

I actually squeezed the fuel out the float & put it back in - good idea to use a soldering iron - will give it a go - thanks for the idea.

I think it's a replacement float I need too. I ordered a complete sender unit from Rimmers. The illustration on-line shows the sender unit complete with a gasket and new sealer ring. My order arrived today - with no gasket or sealer ring - very annoying, as I would have fitted it tonight if I had all the parts.

I phoned Rimmers, who have actually agreed to send me a gasket and sealer ring free of charge, so fair play to them I suppose.
