    rain gutter?

    Hi All

Just doing some remedial work to the windscreen rim. The wing to windscreen joint I have been told should have a gap. If it should then nows the time to do this as I have a crack line appearing. See photo.

can anyone tell me if this is true for a 1972 MK I please?

There should be a gap between wing and scuttle. Some owners have sealed it to stop water draining down through the inner wing as it should. Without removing the wing you won't know whether it was sealed because the top of the inner wing has rusted through, resulting in water inside the car.......

        Now I've got you worried......

Mine also has a gap but what I cannot understand is thus rainwater is delivered to door jamb and can then also enter lower A post /inner front wing via what looks like "original" hole. I have thus installed an adhesive rubber seal on the door side of the jamb that ensures any rainwater flowing off the roof gutter is deflected harmlessly to the outside of the door jamb. Will post photo or please PM.

Thats why you need to spray rust proofing everywhere! I've just had my car back from the body shop and spent £100 on Dynax S50

Have welded, lead loaded and filled all the gaps/seams between scuttle and front wings, front wings and middle panel and rear wings and rear panel so water runs off and away from any internal body parts as I believe should have been in production, only my opinion mind, hopefully no more cracks or rust.

if it was such a good idea in production and how it's meant to be, why have so many cracked and rusted further down out of sight?

Nice picture of stag with unneccesary bonnet flutes ( unless you have a 7.2 litre ex ford galaxy fitted?) but otherwise what has picture to do with the OP's original topic???????

Thought you may have posted a picture of your door jamb - that might have been helpful?

Mine has the gap at the front too, thought it was standard.

Rear wings and rear panel, have been filled (body filler), which the paint had bubbled, bit of rust and I need to clean out.
Front wings and middle panel, have been filled (body filler), which the paint had bubbled, no rust yet, but I will clean out.
I am thinking of Lead wiping these two areas but never done the leading before.
Body filler doesn't flex so after some time it'll crack, leak in moisture then rust the area.

I believe lead wiping does flex with the panels, so doesn't crack, but not sure.

I have seen articles on the web talking about filing in these areas to stop moisture getting it and rusting the area, but with normal body filler, it just seem to either prolong the inevitable, or hide the rust until it's too late.

                      Hi
Try using polyurathene mastic will flex can be sanded and painted

The Australians used lead body filler on the Triumph saloons they built there, it's probably still the best way to permanently fill gaps since it becomes part of the surrounding metal and is slightly flexible.

It's horses for course for those who have kept there wings on during restoration have little chance of solving the existing rot inside the wing. I myself has fabricated new panels inside and even added a collection vessel that clear the water via a pipe. This gap does clear water from the top scuttle where the scuttle inverts too. I akso have treated mine with spray on wax. If mine were not painted with epoxy resin the wax I'm not sure I would want water in this area but lots of cars use this water clearance method even now many due to the areas the water is going is protected. I personally like to keep the body work as original as poss seam wise. If your really interested get a endoscope to look inside the wing on second thoughts

You just can't help yourself can you, you hypocrite!

My picture shows the front wings to middle section with no gaps, and the bonnet has louvres not flutes dummy.

I am not at home at the moment and cannot take a better picture, anyway I don't even know why I am responding to your antagonistic post!

Hmm not sure what to do now! If I start to tackle this area and it turns out there is a load of rot there I will probable not get much use out of the car this summer. Winter project I'm thinking.
