Removal Air Conditioning

The PO of my '72 Federal Stag has removed the airconditioning. At least most parts of it. The only part left under the bonnet is the vacuum tank.
There is also no water flow valve present anymore, the hot water flows directly to the airco/heater unit. The heating works ok.
Can I remove the vacuum tank without any problems ?

My car has had the air cond disconnected and vacuum removed. I believe the vacuum did control the water flow through the heater as my car now has a non OEM heater tap fitted under the bonnet.

My car is a 71 USA federal all stock I removed the ac but I left the vacuum tank in place,it helps accumulate vacuum

If you remove the vacuum tank you'll need to convert the controls to "heater form" as there are pneumatically activated dampers in the system. The centre fresh air vents can only be operated via the vacuum. The cylinder at the top of the photo is the actuator. The heater valve is also vacuum controlled.

It might be better to remove the under dash part and replace with a standard heater unit, lots of them around. That would replace all the vacuum parts completely....Then l could have your A/c parts....

If I could swap the A/C parts for a lhd dashboard surround without cracks you'd have a deal...........
I think the PO made a hybrid of the A/C since he removed the waterflow valve but left the other vacuum controlled parts in place.
During winter I noticed that the hot/cold lever acted as a switch : there was a lot of heat or no heat at all. The temperature could not be controlled.
It's a nice job for he next winter, removing the A/C and fitting a proper heater.

Hi Peter,

Why not get the A/C working again? That is what I plan to do with my car.
When fitting A/C to a car which did not have this fitted, the most difficult part in the process is finding a good method to incorporate the evaporator to the car. An under-dash unit is cheap but ugly. A built-in evaporator is already part of your car so why not make use of it. All other parts (condensor, compressor, hoses) are available in various sizes.

I took my dash to Aldridge trimming and had them recover it in beige. they also do the black.

I've bought a few of the two speed fan switches but I cannot get my system to work at two speeds! So it just functions as a single speed fan.
