I remember it well, first time I had been to Tony's place and was disappointed with my 112.5 horsepower until Tony told me that was spot on average for a standard Stag. (145 was best engine, no exhausts, ancillaries etc.) They also threw out all of the car mats after yours to reduce the risk of the throttle jamming again as I think happened to yours?

Back to the thread, I typically burble along at lower revs - typically 1000 RPM in Overdrive top, even with a 3:45 diff it still pulls well. I occasionally run it up the rev range to exercise it a bit and love to do third, then overdrive third up to about 4,500 - 5000? ish (too busy watching the road!), it frightens the life out of some motorists (and passengers) when the "old girl" picks her skirts up and flies.

I am struggling to work out what actually happened there, were the piston skirts badly damaged?

two ickle valve kisses to the top of the piston. There were a few like this

This is after cleaning and reassembling on a new crank, different story!

Doh!!! Now I see, I was looking at the pool of oil? on the RH piston which makes it look like the piston crown has been squashed in

Engines that have been stood for a long while often end up with little valve marks on the pistons due to the buckets sticking, if they are not stuck too badly the piston tapping the valve will free it off without bending anything, unlike the engine I bought some years ago that had been running on 7 cylinders due to a bent valve (rebuilt engine stood for some years)

that's right Ian ,brown trousers when the carpet bit the pedal and held on !! funnily enough its happened on my stag recently you need to be very careful with the loose fitting carpet to ensure it wont snag

Nearly every piston in my engine had recent valve marks in the piston tops. It looks like a common issue. Could ill fitted timing chains be a possible cause of this if the fitter has not redriled the cam sprockets and instead just gone as near as possible?

                      Yes definitely.
The engine in my old Stag had a crank pulley with marks 4 degrees out, and that left the cam marks half a tooth out, and the previous rebuilder had guessed the wrong way when fitting the cam. The result was one full tooth out and inlet valve marks in every piston on one bank (nice and shiney marks, not full of carbon).

Because the exhaust valve is a lot smaller than the inlet things have to be seriously out before contact occurs, more likely to be from a stuck valve.
