    Basic need to have items

I will be setting off on my first long distance trip next weekend. By long distance I mean a couple of hundred miles
I thought it might be good to post experienced traveler must have items here for anyone thinking about a long journey in their stag.
I purchased a set of jump leads last night from aldi for 7,99 they were reduced.

    I never leave home without:

a small set of o/e spanners
    a couple of screwdrivers
    Some electrical wire
    Fuses
Bulbs (mostly rear lights and indicators)
    Insulating tape (fabric backed)
    The Stag's wiring diagram
    Jump leads
    Electrical multimeter
    spare ignition module

I'm sure there's more lurking in the spare wheel well......

I think Richard has covered most bits but I'd also add duct tape, insulating-tape, cable-ties, some spare engine oil, coolant and transmission fluid (if auto), rubber gloves (so you don't get covered in grease), a towel (for when you do get covered in grease), warning triangle, cheap Ebay car mobile phone charger, first aid kit and hi-vis jackets for every occupant..... And if you're pushing the boat out a jump-starter/tyre inflator. Also worth keeping the Haynes manual in there so you can throw it at the kindly-AA man so he's the one getting dirty.

Having previously owned an old Alfa Spider I'm a dab-hand at breaking down, alas very little room in my boot for luggage!

        Hi Edd,

You might like to have a look at this thread (http://socforum.com/forum/showthread...uring-tool-kit) which has some good suggestions.

A working torch or a lamp which will run from the cars battery. You can have a 'light' app on the mobile phone but it is heavy on battery usage.

These lists are making a little worried (I haven't even got the stag back on the road yet!)...the other list in the reply above also suggests a spare fuel pump, spark plug/lead, distributor cap/arm etc should also be in the boot! Not sure how often and how much time everyone expects to spend in laybys fixing their cars?!

Surely you need a hammer in the boot as well though (possibly my most used tool so far?!!!).

I also like the credit card suggestion...if in doubt throw money at the problem...

AA card (or similar breakdown/recovery service - recovery is the important bit) and a mobile phone.

Ask yourself what do you carry around in your modern car? Why should an older car be any different? - especially one like yours that has been very carefully fully rebuilt.

Having said that nothing wrong with a gallon of water, pliers, adjustable spanner, screwdriver, hammer (large or small your choice), insulating tape, tiewraps. Much else not worth worrying about in my opinion.

Nothing - other than an AA card and your mobile phone.

Have confidence in your car and your rebuilding skills.

There seems to be almost a competition as to who can cram the most tools and spares into their car. Which will probably never, ever get used. Same with the TR boys too.

Well at present I have no spare wheel so that's going to be a start getting that sorted. There some very useful tips. Having being just come back from Devon where some areas have no signal the mobile phone is never to be totally relied on in my opinion. I'm pretty confident but lately just busy to really road test further as I'm either working or its horrible weather.
My first journey in the stag was on the back of a low loader AA truck 10 minutes after buying it. I have green flag through my bank but must say the service the AA gave was brilliant.

Well, I agree that it can be overkill to carry too much in the boot, but I've always carried a selection of tools and spares - since my first Mini back in 1973.

The only items I have used include the wheel nut spanner, the jack, the torch, the jump leads (to help out someone else!) and probably a pair of pliers. But everything I carry, apart from the torch and the high-viz, is in the spare wheel under the boot floor, so the only adverse effect is to marginally increase the fuel consumption.

I haven't carried a spare fuel pump since I sold my last 2.5PI.

I've gone for 15" minilites, of which I bought 4, & sold off my 5No. Stag alloys. I recently bought an old steel wheel with tyre from Robsport which cleaned up a treat and only cost a tenner.

Regards toolkits etc, I side with Another Peter, AA card & mobile phone although I would add a box of Swan Vestas in case you get cold waiting for the tow truck.
