change brake fluid dot4 to silicon

    Hi all,
I live in Cyprus when it can get quite humid in the summertime. I am finding that the front brake caliper pistons are going rusty and freezing on. If I change to silicon with new pistons will there be any problems with the rubber seals in other areas.
    Hope someone can help,
    Thanks

I have just freed of some calliper pistons one was pretty rusty it had silicone fluid in it. whether the piston was rusty before the fluid was installed I don't know. I personally don't like the spongy pedal feel that comes with it. Remember you are supposed to change ALL the rubber seals in the system and make sure you flush out all the old fluid. Graham

When I changed my front calipers needed to be changed as they leaked 4 years later my master cyclinder leaked. I changed the master cyclinder seals myself been ok since but there was a warning with new seals not recommended for silicon brake fluid.

        Hello,

On my TR6 I changed to silicon DOT5 and I am very happy with this modification. However, I changed ALL rubber parts in the brake system. Silicon is not hydroscopic, so it does not mix with water and it is lighter than water. This means that if there should be any water in the system, this gathers at the lowest points - i.e. in the front calipers and the rear brake cylinders. You can get rid of this water by bleeding the system. As the bleed nipples at the front calipers do not sit at the lowest point, this means that you must loosen the calipers and turn them upside-down when bleeding the system.

        Good luck!

        Dieter - from Germany.
