    Possible new insurance rules

I had an interesting conversation this evening with a friend who does talks for the Motor Sports Association , and he told me this story.
In Romania a guy was up a ladder at a house and a tractor driven by the farmer who owned the property backed into the ladder causing the guy to fall and sustained serious injury . The Guy claimed for the injury's but the farmer was not insured so he sued the farmer not sure how but it ended up in the European courts ( nothing to do with the EU) and the judges decided that all motor propelled vehicles in Europe must be insured be them on the road or not so it would cover off road bikes lawn mowers etc even if on a Sorn. the Governments of European country's have 18 months to implement the laws whether in the EU or not .There has been a big meeting of the insurers to discuss the matter and the government are trying to decide how to implement the law .
Surprisingly France are in favour. Has anyone else heard this story or have I got it wrong?

I read about this in the paper about 2-3 weeks ago. Government said that they did not think there was any need for a change in the law.

Here in France the law already requires all cars to be insured at all times and for any driver.

I remember years ago, both my father and grandfather used to insure their cars for any driver. Nowadays it just seems to be 'named drivers'. Do 'any driver' policies still exist in the UK? Because he's in the trade, my son can't insure himself to be able to drive other cars, even though he doesn't have his own business. About ten years ago his Lancaster Insurance classic car policy covered him for driving any car (third party) but when we insured the Stag in his name with them last year they wouldn't include that in the cover. Seems a bit unfair considering he's been driving for eighteen years without any accidents or convictions.

This is not just a Stag, this is a Mimosa Stag - well it will be soon.

Many car policies no longer include the "drive another car not owned by you" benefit. I have 4 policies,Stag with Footman james (not covered), Land Rover with Admiral, (not covered), AX with Swiftcover (not covered), 106 GTi with Adrian Flux Equity Red Star (which does cover driving other cars). So that is only 1 out of 4 policies. I find it frustrating as we have a lot of cars in the family - at the last count we had 11 all taxed, insured and MoT'd registered at our house between 7 people - would love to get a blanket policy so we could all drive each others cars but when I've looked into in the past it has been prohibitively expensive.

In your case, Roger, I'd give Admiral a phone call - we have three cars and they are all on one policy, including the agreed value Stag, both of us to drive any of them. And quite a lot cheaper than any other policy I've had.

I found Admiral expensive and am with Aviva, significantly cheaper. Also check Churchill on the multi car policy.

Already got 5 cars on a multicar policy with admiral. Every renewal I have a battle with them to get the premiums down to what I could get them for individually either with admiral or other companies. But it still does not mean everyone can drive everyone elses car. You can't have 5 named drivers and my admiral policy specifically states the you are not covered to drive other cars.

Well with a bit of luck when the vote goes against staying in Europe we won't need to worry about more stupidity from the Euro law makers!

Common sense and the lawmakers in Brussels do not go together - If they had common sense they wouldnt get jobs there!
