Just to give you a bit of an update. The mechanic sounds positive and is believes the sound is coming from the near side cam cover. He mentioned removing the heads and replacing the timing chains. He did say how strong the engine sounded and reassured me that it wouldn't cost thousands to rectify......so fingers crossed that when he has it in for repairs in the next couple of weeks, the news will be positive! Thanks once again for your advice everyone....much appreciated and I will let you know the definitive answer on the problems and costs! Looking forward to taking it out if the nice weather finally comes!!
    Cheers....Matt

Just one more thing to consider is the viscous coupling as they can make a horrendous noise if the bearings fail and can make you fear the worst. Either way I hope the repair bill is not too bad.
I love deadlines - I like the whooshing sound they make as they pass by!

Matt, unless he is doing something other than changing the timing chains, I'm not sure why he needs to take the heads off?

Without being able to hear it, from what you say I would expect him to be connecting an external oil pressure gauge to establish what it actually is. If it is suspected to be Big Ends then The next move would be remove the sump to physically look at the bearings and journals. The only Knock (as you describe) but more of a tapping from the top end could possibly be a loose valve guide and maybe what he is alluding to.

I presume he believes there could be a problem with one of the heads.......he did reel off a few things it could be, so I guess I'll have to wait and see!

It would probably work out cheaper!

It could be your viscous coupling infront of your rad which has gone, this also makes a knocking noise!

Hopefully it's a simple fix......... I did have a closer look and the sound was most obvious if I placed my hand on the near side cam cover where I could 'feel' the knocking. I should get a better idea soon as it's in for an MOT and repairs and will update when I get the answer. I appreciate my description was quite vague but reall appreciate all the advice I have received. Absolutely love this site for all the help that is freely given.....much appreciated.....I just wish I could help others but unfortunately I am clueless with mechanics!
                          Cheers....Matt

I now have the car back and because the noise is barely noticeable, i have been advised that I should just enjoy the car for the summer and if the noise gets more pronounced, then he will have a closer look. Obviously now the sun is out, it would be a shame to waste it! Thanks again for all your advise and sorry I couldn't give a final answer! Hopefully it won't come back to bite me!

                            Cheers.....Matt
