Of nuts and bolts and things

Whilst rebuilding one of our engines I noticed that the screws and bolts I had removed seemed to be a motley collection, some varying in size by as much as half an inch. I therefore came to the conclusion that it was either rebuilt at some time by a short sighted Gorilla on a foggy day or that it was an original factory built engine. I remember being told some years ago by a delivery driver, that he had worked at BL in the seventies and if they ran out of one size bolt they would use one from the next bin. This however would only end up with a quarter of an inch discrepancy.
I have made a table of the screws and bolts in the HU - HB series extrapolating from the sizes offered by suppliers and I hope I have found the numbering sequence (chart attached). If any one has the original listing I would like to check if I am correct. There are other parts with six figure numbers which I have yet to figure out. I know that the garages did not know the specification of fixings merely getting new parts from numbered bins. Any information allowing the car to be re-assembled with vaguely the correct parts would alway be welcome.

PS I have edited the bolt table file after looking at the Hardware Catalog, a few errors around the 4" lenghts

If you hunt around on the internet you will find copies of the "Standard Triumph" Hardware catalogue" in pdf format. This predates the Stag by some margin - 1963 I think, but it has all of the hardware codes in it. I did a quick search and found one here: http://obswww.unige.ch/~wildif/cars/docs/ . It is about the 11th. one down.

      Many thanks Dave
I've managed to download the PDF eventually, all 54 pages at 1.66mb, just what I was looking for.
My searches under fasteners, fixing, standard parts etc had yielded nothing.
The damage to the threads in the holes due to short bolts was such I'm thinking of buying shares in Recoil inserts.

      Thanks again

It looks like the site is down .

            Google "Standard Triumph Hardware catalogue".

You will have to hunt around a bit, but there are several copies out there!

(possibly add "pdf" to the search)

            Regards

            Dave

              Hi Paul
It took me about a day to get the Hardware catalogue file.
I managed to eventually download it, the put it through Acrobat to remove a lot of the white space around.
If you want It I have put it on one our our web sites, if you go to the link it should load ok.
warning it is 1.66mb so hope you have broadband.

              regards Barry

                  HI Dave
I have just modified the post and this time I have tried it out.
                  Must have been finger trouble.
                  Hope it works

                      Hi guys,

I didn't think my question justifies a new topic so I have tacked it onto the end of this one!

I am trying to workout the size of the bolt that goes through the subframe mount.

In the parts book it is given as HB1042. On Rimmers site their image gives it as part No. 256077. Their description of the part is very helpfully "Bolt"!

Extrapolating from Barry's table I have come up with 7/16" x 5 1/4" UNF. Can anyone confirm this for me.

                      Cheers

                      Dave

                        Hi Dave
I have just checked the Hardware Catalogue and HB842 and HB942 are 5 1/4" long and the prefix 10 is for 7/16" so I think you are safe in that assumption. The catalogue does not show HB1042 as the catalogue is circa 1960. I think I have a couple of old ones in one of my rebuild boxes but it is under 5 other boxes up on the pallet racking so not immediately accessible otherwise I would check.
                        regards Barry

                          Hi Barry

I am in the process of dismantling my engine and have found the same assortment of sizes of bolts being used.

No wonder gaskets etc leak and things fall off!!

I have found your table very useful
