    Fuel Tank Vent Pipes

    Can anyone provide a diagram of the routing of the various fuel tank vent pipes? Those shown in the dealers’ workshop manual and the parts list diagram on Rimmers’ website are not very clear.
    When I bought the car a few months ago there was a strong smell of petrol in the cabin. On investigating, I found an additional vent connection on the top of the tank adjacent to the tank breather pipe which connects half way down the filler pipe. This vent does not appear on any of the diagrams I can find and was just open to the atmosphere within the boot, hence the smell of petrol. I have just blanked it off for now to stop the smell.
    Additionally, the fuel spill pipe connection on the fuel filler cap assembly was not connected. It is not clear from the manual or parts list diagram where this should be routed to. Again, I have just blanked it off for now.

    If you extend the breather pipes down thought the boot floor you should get rid of the fumes. One pipe connectes to an air filter which is a flame trap, the other is the cap overflow.

          Martin. Perhaps this may help. Firstly, the small pipe on the fuel tank next to the fuel gauge sender is supposed to be blanked off. It is there because the Stag shared the same tank as the fuel injected 2000 saloon, and that was where the spill from the pump went back to the tank. A short length of fuel hose, with one end blocked off by a suitably sized short bolt and pipe clip, will do the job permanently.
          There should be a hose-often clear plastic, from the drain hole that you can see in the base of the cup behind the filler cap lid (but in front of the rubber seal), that leads down and out through a hole in the floor of the boot.
          The metal breather pipe on top of the tank should be connected to the spigot in the elbow of the filler hose, and the breather pipe that has the fuel filter/flame trap in it, also disappears down behind the tank, and exits through a rubber grommet in the base of the vertical panel at the back of the boot.
          If the smell still persists after securing that lot, maybe one of the unions on the pump is weeping very slightly. I won't suggest that the tank could be!
