Been running on the original 6v coil with lumenition fitted for years. Decided to upgrade to a lumenition sports coil and it fails when hot (car kangaroo's). Swapped for a Lucas sports coil instead and this does exactly the same. Each time the original coil works fine. I have checked and double checked that the supply is 6v and tried measuring the current draw but both sports and origninal coils draw the same current. Even tried swapping the HT leads incase they are breaking down with sports coil. what am I missing ? surely I can't have bought two duff coils?

Might be teaching you to "suck eggs" if so I appologize in advance but have you made sure the coil is not touching the top of the engine block. If it is mounted in the original position you should really make sure it is raised up as far as possible in the bracket otherwise heat from the block can make the coil run a lot hotter than it should leading to failure.

Thanks, for the replies. The reason for swapping is purely so that I have a spare. If mine ever fails in some far flung location I would like to know that the replacement will work. With regards to positon it is raised as high as possible so should not suffer conduction heat from the engine block.
