    Moving the Alternator

    Hello,

Why do people move the Alternator ?

I see there are a few alternator re-positioning bracket kit's avail.

The move it so that you can catch your clothes on it if you lean too far into the engine bay

I have the wards one. Very strong and powder coated. Be careful as you may require their altinator to line up. My existing didn't fit.

I moved mine in order to fit the Stagdad ewp (nla).
It has the side effect of raising the alternator away from road crud etc although this is controversial.

Another reason to move it is to fit the old style tubular manifolds (also nla)

My bracket is homemade but resembles the TH one more than Ward's.

In my case to fit the old style manifolds.
If it wasn't for the option of a/c I'm sure the factory would have fitted it there originally.
Three benefits, access, stays clean, same drive belt used as PAS pump.

There is one downside, original position is proven, and probably runs cooler since it is getting some airflow from under the front. The alternator will be delivering some 500 watts plus, on max load, so theres a lot of heat to dissipate.

New position is higher up, and fed by very hot air from the rad. . Maybe not too much airflow there. Running hotter degrades reliability.

            But I know its debatable.

Mines been in its new position for the last 20 years, no issues.
Infact it's the original Lucas alternator, the only maintenance has been to replace the carbon brushes, before it was moved.
You should see the position of the alternator on my Maserati, under the inlet manifold in the V of the engine. It gets very hot there!

Mine repositioned four years ago to fit an 80 amp alternator with a Wards bracket to house a stagdad pump. But I would have moved it anyway. I don't see heat as an issue, Never been a problem for me.

I am going to move mine soon. Wards bracket seems to be out of stock.
Have sent a message asking when it might be back in stock.
Anyone know if there is room for the hot air pipe under the Wards bracket fitted alternator or does the pipe have to be removed?

The cost of Wards and TH brackets are to costly if you can weld and are handy with spanners you can make your own for a fraction of the price.
I made mind and two for my friends.they take no more that 1 hour.

I used the TH one ,easy fit ,neat ,I needed a shorter fan belt 1078 mm to stop the alternator bouncing on the inner wing(slightly) 6 months no problems ,and it lines up well

Moved mine some 6 years ago, using TH bracket. No problems and very easy to get to. Would like scientific proof that it runs hotter, rather than theories. No idea if alternator clashes with certain header tanks? as my tank is mounted high on the bulkhead.

Didn't need to move mine when I fitted Phoenix tubular manifolds, but as I was playing around with heads and my original alternator was playing up I though 'might as well'. Made my own thanks to help from Stagdad. It uses the same belt as the PS pump, so only need to carry one spare now.....
