    Auto and manual query?

I keep seeing time and again the statement "fitted with the rare manual O/D box" and also read that only 1 in 4 were manuals. But scanning all the adverts it appears that there is pretty much a 50/50 split in ones around. Is it that the autos were first to be scrapped and have now evened out or that manuals were not as rare as implied.
Right I'm off to look at a car with Mrs J today

If you look at production data, Clayton, it was roughly a 50/50 split. Auto/manual numbers are available for each year except 1976. With the exception of that year (when 3110 Stags were built) the total manual cars was 11716 and the total autos were 11113. *

The rare ones are the Non overdrive manuals, I've never seen one. If I were looking again and with hindsight, I would look for a MOD or ZF 4 speed.

p.s when Mrs J looks over theses cars for you doe's she give you a written appraisal or is it just a quick tyre kicking session

      Happy hunting.

      Ian.

          Thanks Dave
I presume I'm seeing the old classic sales routine of "fitted with the rare..." As an enticement carrot!

I'd say that was the case. It would be interesting (to some ) to know what the survival ratio is. Good luck.

DJT is right - it is just "dealer speak". I've also seen ads for "rare auto", "the more desirable manual/auto", "the best colour" etc.

Add to the fact a lot of people have converted auto to manual I reckon auto is the rarer of the two now.

I did the engine for an early Saffron Mk1 a few years ago - that had the original non O/D box - didn't get to drive it but imagine it cruises like a standard auto...
