Bad smell of fuel in garage after refilling.

    Hello guys,
Just purchased my first Stag a few weeks ago, absouletley loving every moment spent with her, feels like being 17 years old again. Have even cleared my garage to store her which I could not get in for 10 years plus because of all the junk I kept.
Any way I need some advise if possible, get a real strong smell of fuel throughout the house after I have refuelled the car. This smell disappears after a few days of further usage. It doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere. Has anybody else experienced this same problem?

    Hi
I had a similar problem it turn out to be where pipe goes into tank, was loose and when full it was letting fuel out, it's easy to see its at top to rear of tank.
No expert though I'm like you only had my stag a couple of months.
    Regards
    David

Check the breather pipe work in the boot. Mine was missing

There is a short pipe near the fuel sender. It should be caped off. A short piece of fuel pipe and a bolt is the normal answer.

Hi Bivers (real name ?) - Welcome to the Forum and Stag ownership - great choice and glad you're enjoying it. There are several possible causes for this but all are relatively easily solvable.

The first thing to do, I would suggest, is to try to determine whether the smell is coming from the front or the back of the car.

Probably the worst is if the bottom of your tank has corroded and is seeping fuel. Next, if it is only after refuelling, is to examine the filler pipe and the connections and pipework around the tank. It is all fairly easy to access - just remove the right hand boot board and carpeted side to the boot. On top of the tank there are two small outlets - one of these should be blanked off - usually with a bit of petrol pipe and a bolt held in by a jubilee clip - is this still fitted ?

Do a search on here to see how the filler pipe connections should be - it's possible the tank make-up pipe has come loose.

Anyway, see what others suggest and come back on here and tell us of your findings when you've done your first examinations.

            Cheers

            Julian

              Thanks Julian,
Checked all pipe work and tank for splits and corrosion. Found a breather pipe not connected with no filter inbetween. I will buy a filter and install and see what happens when refuel next time and post again if no good.

Just need a bit of good weather to get full enjoyment again.

              Regards
              Bivers (mixture of actual name)
