    High pressure hose

    How easy is it to replace the power steering pump high pressure hose with engine in place? I am hoping to fit my new rebuilt engine Saturday and whilst cleaning the engine bay tonight have noticed that the pipe has many splits in it but not leaking. Not sure how thick they are but it has to be replaced but I don't want to stop the engine refitting plan for Saturday

    Any comments much appreciated

    No problem. I think I fed mine in from bottom up. They seem to leak after being disturbed.

      I replaced my power steering hoses as well, with the engine in place. Not a problem.

        Just a bit fiddly to get the connections right at the rack. Make sure it is positioned so it doesn't rub on anything. Had one wear through once where it has been rubbing against the lower steering column. Hell of a mess and quite spectacular when the fluid hit the hot exhaust manifold. :shock:.

          Thanks guys. I must get this new engine in but when I looked at the angle of the pipe coming out of the steering rack, it look difficult to get a spanner on. I suppose it would make sense at least to get the old one off before the engine goes in.

            If I remember rightly, it's easier to attach to the rack first of all then unbolt the pump so that you can align the top connection more easily. You may find that you'll get a better quality hose if you take your old one to somewhere like Pirtek to be rebuilt - I had a replacement one fail within a few weeks and Pirtek identified incorrect crimping as the cause.

              You can easily buy high pressure oil hose, and use jubilee clipsto secure the ends. It doesnt look so good, butat least you can be sure its tight enough, and the hose only costs a few pounds, much cheaper than crimped assemblies. Rally Design and Demon Tweeks sell hose and also do special strong clips. You can also fit s/s braid if you want to add some chafe proofing.

                  Any hose clips will only take a max of 250psi but a crimped fitting on 1 wire hose will take 4000psi for an extra 10-15 pounds if you take it to any other hydraulic hose suppler but pirtek as they are twice the price of any one else ,speaking as an independent hydraulic hose engineer.

                    Hi Andrew

                    I replaced mine a couple of months ago and it was easy. I fed it in from the bottom up and loosely started the thread on the rack first. The new hose is a slihtly different shape from the original, but it fits fine.
