    Exporting a Stag to Belgium

    Hello,
I will eventually be exporting my stag to Brussels. I understand the process is pretty painless, but paperwork is required.
It's been 18 years since I lived in the UK and I can't for the life of me remember what paperwork goes with a car other than a V5 an MOT certificate.

They are talking about a 'certificat de conformité' which is issued by the manufacturer with all the sizes, weights, dimensions, all approved for the EU - does that exist?

My car had been sitting outside for years before undergoing its current restoration and the documents were in the (leaky) boot and have rotten - how do I go about getting replacement documents? and what proof of ownership do I need?

If there are any Belgians or expats who have moved their cars out to Belgium, please don' t hesitate to get in touch.

    Thanks in advance
    Adam

    Info for replacement V5.
Get a replacement vehicle log book (V5C registration certificate) if the original has been lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, or you have not received one for your new vehicle.

Is there not a specialist where you live who handles all the paperwork needed and arranges new plates for your car.
Ask at a local classic car club the best way to go about it.

There are plenty in Tenerife who deal with imported cars, and I just left it to one of them to handle things, just turning up with the car
(the Stag then the Honda) at required places on required dates for things like inspection & vehilcle testing.

Took about 12 months to get the Stag onto local plates, but the Honda only took about a month. There will probably be an Import charge - but don't know how it would be calculated in Belgium.

Come to think of it why not contact one our Belgian members via the Club.

No, no VAT or import charges for you. Switzerland is not EU...

              Hi
I expect the procedure will be similar to the French system. As you can't get a certificate of conformity because the manufacturer no longer exists, in France the Federation Francaise de Vehicules de l'Epoch issues a certificate that the vehicle is of a certain age and specification. I expect the Belgians have a similar organisation. In France a certificate is also required from the tax office to the effect that there are no taxes owing on the car, which is issued with little formality. Those documents together with the UK registration document will enable you to register the car in France and Belgium, being in the EU is certain to have a like system. Here in France it is a very painless exercise.
              Good luck.

The only form needed for the uk is the blue part on the v5 which asks if you are permently exporting the car, fill it in and send it off and bobs your uncle. No idea what happens on the belgium side though.

My car was exported to Belgium by a PO and then brought back to England by the chap I bought it from. I have a file with all the paperwork, for both trips. If you like I'll have a look when I get home tomorrow and see if there's anything that might help you make sense of it.

Our Stag was originally from UK and I recently imported a Lotus Esprit into Belgium.
UK paperwork is the easy part: just send the export-slip from the V5 back to DVLA with the information of the new owner.
                      In Belgium it's less straightforward:
                      - first you need to go to customs, to get form 705, for which you need proof of ownership (sales contract will suffice)
                      - next to Belgian MOT for a pre-registration check, where they complete the request for registration (make sure the headlights have been changed to LHD spec and you have a warning triangle, extinguisher and first aid kit).
                      - if you don't plan on using the car as a daily driver (i.e. to and from work or other professional activities), you can register the car via DIV (with the previous UK registration documents) as an 'oldtimer' on an O-plate.
                      - if you want to use the car without any limitations on a normal plate, you need a European certificate of conformity. Which as far as I know does not exist for the Stag because it predates the requirement for such a document (and being British means EU regulations have less influence). With the Lotus I could get a new certificate via Lotus Belgium. But as Triumph no longer exists and BMW has no interest in anything but the name, this is a problem. I did get the full paperwork from the British Motor Heritage Trust, but this was insufficient and I would have to go through the procedure for individual conformity, which can take quite some time. I never did get round to it...

Feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance!

Its beginning to sound complicated but I suppose it's a one-off hurdle. Filip I may come back to you
