    Brake failure warning light

Hi. I'm new to Stag ownership & this is my first post! I have just got the brake failure warning light working (the bulb was missing!). The light comes on with the ignition & goes out after start up but when I went for a drive this evening, I noticed that when I came to a stop, the light flickers and then comes on. If I put it in 'N' or 'P', it goes out but in 'D' or 'R', it comes on. When I pull away, it goes out. I guess it has something to do with the slightly lower RPM in 'D' & 'R' when stationary but don't know how this relates to the brakes! Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Carlton, try the cheapest option first, a new oil pressure switch.

Mine was doing that and I realised the very dim, green oil light was also flickering, so it was operating in conjunction with the oil light, so low oil pressure at idle.

I fixed the issue on mine by re-stowing the oil dipstick properly to recreate the felt seal around the dipstick hole.

      Hope that helps

      Ian

Ps mine is also auto, so didn't happen in neutral or park, but did at idle in any of the drive gears

For some reason, I think that is an oil pressure thing. From memory, there is a link between the oil pressure and brake failure switches somewhere. Certainly mine goes out from a start up when the oil pressure rises.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Thanks Ian. I checked the oil pressure warning light and it didn't come on. That was another warning light that I had to put a new bulb in! I'll check the dipstick and make sure it's seated properly.

Thanks for the reply. Hope it's not a sign of a more serious engine problem! Wish it had an oil pressure gauge.

It grounds through the oil switch supposedly to check the bulb when the ign is turned on (did away with it on mine) Fit an oil pressure gauge one of the best you can do apart from that tankie thing that we have all sworn not to mention

Thanks for that. I think an oil pressure gauge is the way to go. Could do with an extra eye; one for the road, one for the temp and one for the oil pressure!!

The Mk1 warning light design is flawed becuase it does not apply the full voltage to the OIL warning light and so it never lights up brightly enough. I converted mine to the MK2 system which overcomes this fault. It's an easy wiring mod which gives full brightness to the OIL light.

There all Flawed if you think about it, Do you really only want to know your oil pressure is failing only after it gets to very low single figures

Thanks Chris. Mine is a Mk2. The oil light glows dimly when I turn on the ignition but does go out immediately on start-up.

I think I'll fit an oil pressure gauge. Not sure whether to replace the clock with one or get a dual temp and oil gauge and replace the original temp gauge. I'm a bit apprehensive about doing either, as I'm not used to working on cars but willing to learn!

I've got a combined oil pressure and water temp, I'm very happy that a quick glance every so often reassures me about the health of the engine!!
