    Triumph TR8 Ride Height

Not Stag related, but I acquired a TR8 convertible at the beginning of the year and am having problems with the low ride height. I scrape speed bumps and even the road at times with uneven camber. I replaced all the springs and shocks with standard items - same size as original, with polybushes, although the springs seemed to vary by 1 or 2 cm from newIMG_0097.jpg.IMG_0181.jpgIMG00645-20150124-1548.jpg

My ride height is lower than practically every other TR7 and 8 I have measured, by 50mm to 100mm. The car does have a non standard exhaust that makes matters worse, as it is the lowest point under the car. I have a new stainless Rimmers exhaust to fit that should help a little.

My question is if anyone has used these:

to fit under or above the springs to increase ride height? I have also seen aluminium ones and one of these was fitted to my Stag for some reason - now removed.

I know it is not a Stag but the principle is the same. Any thoughts appreciated.

As an ex TR7 owner & renewed all the suspension during my ownership - just a thought are the anti roll bars at the front & rear on the right way round ?

I know the front one can be fitted ar.es about t.t & trying think how the rear ones are fitted to the suspension arms with the 2 bolts at the flat end - maybe too.

Certainly 50 -100 mm is a big difference - maybe a call to Steve at S+S or a post on the TR 7 Forum of the TR drivers club may help.

TR7 or 8 springs fitted, is there a substantial weight difference in engines?

        Hi Neil,

Thanks for your suggestions. The rear anti roll bar is fitted OK, I removed and replaced this when fitting the rear springs. I will check the front. I have tried the TR register but not the Drivers club, so thanks for the link. Someone else also suggested S and S.

Jakesmig, the TR8 springs are slightly heavier but I think they are the same length. I also read that the engines are about the same weight, with the V8 being all alloy.

It is quite baffling, but probably a simple answer.

America was always a big market for Triumph which is why it was such a disaster that the Stag bombed there.

IIRC something like over 90% of TR7 production went to the States so that would probably be the best place to go for advice.

            Cheers

Thanks Guys, I will post the question on the TR7 forum. I did manage to talk to Robsport today, but they only suggested replacing the exhaust or bringing the car to them. My ride height from road to bottom of centre of wheel arch lip is 57 / 58 cm front / rear. I measured the original TR8 in the latest copy of Triumph magazine and John's are 62cm. A big difference!

Perhaps I will just put a skid pan underneath!

                Just a thought...
Did you have to compress the replacement spring by much?

As the shocks absorbers might be in correct length..

Mark, check to see if there are oversized spacer blocks fitted ON Top of the front engine subframe between it and the body. To lower the body the suspension height is then altered by spring length to drop the body down whilst the subframe remains at the same height, that's how I did it on my TR7 race car.

                    Allan,

The rear springs are a doddle to fit, with little compression, the front do need some compression to reassemble the Mcpherson strut. I guess I cannot rule anything out right now.

Micky, I am not sure fully understand but need to look at the subframe - the car is at a lock up. Thanks for the suggestion.
