I'm thinking of buying a Stag

Hi everyone, currently just a guest but will join up if I become an owner. Living in France but intend to buy in UK.

What do I look for when considering buying a Stag? Any help/advice would be most welcome going forward.

    Cheers,

Donkey (they wouldn't let me use my real name)

    Big question.

Start with a lot of reading and research. Manual or auto? LH or RH drive; as you live in France? Pristine or project? Budget?

There are many horror stories doing the rounds but so many of these should be regarded with a healthy circumspection. It's easy to pay far too much for an absolute sack of trouble (I did... ) but, with patience and care there are good ones out there.

Well prepared and maintained ones are, obviously perhaps, not cheap and asking prices appear to be climbing steadily. Many of those owned by club members appear to have been, or can be well on the way towards, sorted and occasionally come up for sale on this site.

As they are all some forty or so years old one must be prepared to look past the shiny bits and to recognise any scars or scabs.

The good news is; almost anything can be fixed if you have sufficient time, money or skill.

    Good luck.

Where in France are you? There is a France based member, on here, who is/was considering selling his.

Hello Donkey. Why do I feel like a big green Ogre saying that?

I was in your shoes exactly 2 years ago and a looked at a lot of rotten apples before I found the peach I have now. In fact, it found me. I kept posting my experiences on the forum and a fellow member contacted me asking if I wanted to buy his stag. So, keep a running commentary on the forum and you never know...

Also, get out there and look at some. I looked at some real bad ones. A classic place for rust is where the bottom of the rear wing meets the top of the sill, rearwards of the doors. It can be difficult to spot from the outside if someone has been good with filler so, open the tonneau cover and lift out the soft top. With the tonneau cover still open you can see down inside to this seam. The whole area behind the back seat is prone to rust to it is worth inspecting this area while the tonneau cover is open. Also, make sure you take it for a good long test drive including high speed running and slow town running and keep an eye on the temp and oil pressure gauges.

            Good luck!

            Steve

                  Hello Donkey,

Paul Roberts has kindly pointed me to this thread. I have been considering selling my Stag, but have yet concrete to do anything about it. I need to reduce the number of cars I have. If you are interested, I am on 05 53 95 56 64 and donald.maxwell@orange.fr - it's a good'un.

Could a moderator move Don's response to the public section of the forum, please?

"Donkey" will not be able, as a guest, to access this section and both parties will miss out.

                    Thanks.

Sorry, Kevin, I thought when Donkey's reply was made, the thread was in the general forum and was, later, moved to the for sale section.
