    Stag shines!!!

We were part of a 12 British car trip through southern BC (Nakusp, Creston) to Lewiston, Idaho to Missouri, Montana and the Glacier National Park with its famous 'Going to the Sun Road' - a 50 mile 2 hour trip through mountainous scenary and a 3,300 feet climb. It was busy, but the cars were able to keep moving. The Jag E type V12 engine said that's enough at the top due to vapour-lock, but got going again after cooling down. All other cars performed really well, and I'm very proud of my Stag! I don't have any pics of this road, but the following is from a run that a few of us did by Lewiston, which involved 2 climbs through 1,500 feet to get breakfast at a diner.
Total mileage from the odometer is 2,300 miles over 7 days.

No real problems, but that oil seal around the end cap of the oil pump failed again and the underside is a bitumen-solid mess as oil leaked out and burnt on the exhaust every time the engine was under load. This is getting frustrating.

One of the wheels failed because the splines on adapter hub and inside of wheel simply disintegrated into a fine powder. Not sure why, but the adapter looks deformed and it was difficult to remove the wheel. Luckily this happened on the way home and became evident as I braked at a fuel pump; nasty sounds from below. So we changed the adapter (lucky I had a new spare) and put on the spare wheel. This might be expensive to fix, new wheels and adapters????

    Tanya,

Was the hub adaptor painted ? Not good practice if so, even if powder coated the vibration cracks up the paint which then breaks into ever smaller pieces (eventually dust) and allows your wheel to loosen which would screw up the splines and possibly deform the thread area under the spinner.

They are the originals, but I don't think they are covered in anything. Just the copper-based anti-seize stuff.

"No real problems"! What would a real problem be?

Well done Tanya, we are all proud of our full on lady owner, ( I wish I had got to meet you when you were in the UK) We all know how much work you have put in to get you there. I am goona sound a bit of a noooob now but the nuts holding the adaptor can I see the beveled end should they not be the other way round. I know this has no bearing on the problem whatsoever, just thought I'de ask. Brilliant we all love you to bits on here.

Graham, thanks . The nuts are tapered both sides so idiots like me put them on correctly!

Stuart: I was thinking about something like a HGF, or serious overheating! All the cars resented the stop start traffic in temps near to 40oC; temps were in the 30s for the mountains as well. The poor little MGA sprung a rad leak, but was trailered into the next town and fixed by a rad shop (we had a chase vehicle and trailer); one of the TR6s had a fan belt failure but was a quick roadside fix and the E-type didn't like the ethanol in the fuel. Nothing too serious.

................although a wheel failure up in the mountains would have been a real problem

              Hi Graham,

As Tanya says the hub adaptors nuts are bevelled both sides (makes getting a socket on them a test sometimes, not a lot of flat area).
Obviously one side it screws into the chamfer on the hub adaptor stud holes, and the other side needs the bevel on the nuts because the back of the wheel centre when fitted runs very close to the hub centre face, and a full nut profile stands a good chance of hitting it.
