So I picked up my car from Robsport yesterday, it needed some minor bits after the MOT, leaking brake cylinder and a cracked drum, a failed viscous coupling after only 200 miles brand new a year ago

Ben told me it needs a valve pack whatever that is ???????? It won't go into third unless I move the selector back and forth

Not wanting to say Ben is wrong on this far from it but I wonder if changing the auto box fluid would help;
ive had a similar problem with our LR Discovery and, after a lot of research I had to convince the experts that a full flush and replacing the fluid might do the trick- it has, it now works perfectly and possibly saved me £loads in not getting a new box or torque converter which is what some experts suggested.
Do you know how long has the oil been in the box? It does break down over the years and needs replacing like any other oil albeit not so often.

what auto box do you have,i have a spare BW35 im using for parts

I got this auto BW35 from tonypy1 (that's his name on here) it was put in by Trevor at Faversham and he said it was a good box, it has been in since 2011 and the oil is good

Ben had another stag he was working on, a white one and said it had the same problem as mine, said he used some sort of Lucus special mineral fluid new on the market and it was better

I have a couple of bw35 kicking about but also have the valve pack separate sitting in 5 gallons of aft if you need one

Just a thought, would a bw65 fit straight in? Or would I be better off repairing my old box

Prop is different (not easy to come by) converter is different, so you need a complete unit. re weld the exhaust bracket. cross member is different as well, and I seem to remember the inhibitor wires were not long enough. I have never found the need to replace a complete valve block, strip and clean but not replace. have you carried out any suggestions that have been made, kickdown cable, Governor, Ect. I have a brand new Governor that I will give to Russ when he comes over in August if thats any help. Graham

So start with the easy stuff, back off/disconnect the kickdown cable ( I don't think this will make a difference) Above all make sure the selector rod is adjusted correctly. no result here then drain the box drop the sump pan and the valve block there are no rubber seals on the valves so I use clean petrol to wash it in then remove each valve make sure they are clean and shuttle easily. Cleanliness it the most important thing. If there is nothing obvious replace the valve block and sump and drop the tail turret and clean and check the Governor. You really need a workshop manual which has a exploded view of the valve block and shows you how to get to the Governor. Graham
