    Quill shaft.

    Hi all
    Just replaced the quill shaft bearing as the diff oil seal was leaking. The carrier was tack welded to the subframe, so I had to grind it off.how much movement is there when the bolts are put in place before tightening? The holes do not appear to be oval. Has anyone else seen this "mod" carried out??

    the carrier is not usualy welded to the subframe arms,sound like may be you have wear in the bolt holes on subframe arms,a mod i had done on my subframe arms was weld a tube in the holes so it cant go oval

      on mine with bolts and nuts loose fitted and the car on the road I put my trolley jack under the nose and jacked. mine went quite a long way up before the car started to lift eek. I then tightened the bolts and the rear end sat a lot nicer but it dropped down again within a few yards of driving.

      removing subframe arms and welding tubes into the oval holes for the bolts to go through was the only solution to that. Unlikely that the diff nose will be ovalled as it is much thicker steel iirc. while you are at it weld in strengthening ribs into the diff nose to protect it from failure

        Thanks guys. Should the base of the carrier be level with the base of both subframes? I want to get this right first time if possible as I am working on my drive on axle stands, and my old body ain't what it used to be!!

          the bolts are a snug fit and therefore it fits where it should fit, if the holes on the subframe have elongated then it makes the back wheels splay out a little at the bottom.

          Loosening the four bolts a little and jacking under the diff nose gently until it starts to lift the car will show you how much the holes might have elongated

            Why is it that a gromet that protects the furzel ring will generate 300 posts, but somthing that effects every car out there gets 4 replys? Is it fear???? If we dont talk about it, it wont happen!!
            Rant over, i'm just pi---d off with yet another thing to put right. And its my daily driver.

              Have you fitted a strengthened extension piece?

                Hi wilf. Yup nicely reinforced. I just dont understand previous owners. Spent a fortune on pollybushing the whole car, powder coated suspension parts, and then welds the subframe to the extension!
                Still its my own fault, i bought the flippin thing!

                  To be fair, welding the rear arms to the centre section does not affect all cars - in fact I've never heard of it before.

                  However the elongation of holes and subsequent poor fitting of the arms has been covered on here many times before.

                    If your going to take the rear supension out to repair the subframe arms,may be a good idea to redo/change the threads on the trailing arms to UNC
                    do all the mods in one go

                              thats the ticket

                              you might need to play with shims on the trailing arm brackets, hopefully the robsport items will have the brackets and shims already fitted
