Not completely. The correct stat (for a MK2 anyway) has a foot to close the bypass but also a "jiggle pin" to help bleed the system. So he's pretty much correct
The Mk1 stat (without the foot) does not shut off the bypass on the Mk11 manifold allowing hot coolant to be pumped back in to the engine. As I recall the Mk 11 stat wont fit into the Mk1 manifold its too long. You can tell them apart as the Mk11 manifold has a U shaped rubber bypass hose. Graham
I found a MK1 'stat in my Mk2 manifold. i.e. no "foot".
I replaced it with the correct type (jiggle pin or 3mm hole at the 12 o'clock position lets trapped air out) and the cooling system works better. Much better.
Recirculating coolant round and round the engine bypassing the radiator is not a good idea for a Stag.
